1. Columbus does not go into detail about what he really does to the Tainos. He wants Isabella and Ferdinand to think that he is running healthy community that is not controlling or cruel. Columbus also describes the physical aspect to the island saying that it's beautiful and has many mountains.

2. He describes "Espanola" as this beautiful place to make Isabella and Ferdinand focus on the beautiful land instead of the terrible things he was doing to the natives.

3. He described the place as "thickly peopled" and talks about how they communicate threw hand signals. He also says how the Tainos are very kind and brought offerings to Columbus.

4. I think that it should no longer be called Columbus day. Yes, Columbus' morals and our morals today are very different but that doesn't give him the right to slaughter and or enslave a whole community of people. I think if we went back and changed history and Columbus never sailed to the Bahamas then we wouldn't be here today. Therefore I do not have an answer to if Columbus day should still be celebrated.

1. In the first section of Columbus' letter to Ferdinand and Isabella, he described the land he discovered in great detail. He also seems to have left ou a lot of important details such as how he treated the Tainos. Instead of telling the complete truth, he sugar coated a lot of the vulgar details to impress the Monarchs in which are funding his voyages.

2. He describes Espanola as a very peaceful, beautiful island. Christopher describes everything in great detail. I believe he is bringing out the beauty of Espanola to somewhat impress Ferdinand and Isbella so that they invest in more of his expeditions because they will understand that he has found this great land and that he would be able to conquer more.

3. Christopher describes the Tainos as kind and comppassionate people. They often bring them food as well as many other gifts and "crowd the roads" to see him. He also describes them as people who have descended from Heaven.

4. I believe that we shouldn't celebrate Columbus day. Yes, we get out of school and he did discover our land inw hich we now call America, but the Tainos were the indiginous beings in which were established there first. Columbus didn't even know he was in America, he though he was in the Indies which was sort of pathetic for someone whom was famous for being an amazing explorer who knew what he was doing. Not to mention all of the crime he comitted by participating in murdering the Taino civilization and sugar coating his whole experience, even after they knew that they were kind and harmless people who were trying to be helpful. People at the time didn't realize all the bad things he had committed, they thought he had just conquered land and was building civilizations. I feel as if history would be completely changed if people truly knew the gorey details of what really happened. But, I think that since Columbus Day has just been a holiday for so long, people don't want to get rid of it because that would be a difficult change.

In the first section, Columbus reports his arrival on the island
Guanahan, later named San Salvador, after 33 days at sea. In the next, he describes an island he named Espanola and its riches, which include gold and spices. In the third, he explains that he captured some native Tainos and forced them to learn Spanish in order to understand each other. In the final section, Columbus discusses the items he will procure for the royals and the "fortress" he has built for the men he has left behind.

I think Columbus describes Espanola in a glorified sense order to convince Ferdinand and Isabella that their money was well-invested and that they should invest in Columbus again. If he had described it poorly, they may not have wanted to fund his future expeditions.

He describes the native population as having "
astonishing affection and kindness" towards him and the other sailors. Columbus also reports that they think he has "descended from heaven".

Opinion on Columbus Day:
I believe that Columbus Day should not be celebrated because not only did he not discover the Americas, but he also murdered the Taino and other Native Americans. The reason I say he did not "discover" the Americas is the fact that people already lived in the Americas. It was discovered by the people who had lived there for thousands of years before Columbus came along. While I realize he brought attention to the New World, he didn't even know where he was at the time. He died thinking he was in India. As the American Indian Movement explained, "As the original peoples of this land, we cannot, and we will not, tolerate social and political festivities that celebrate our genocide." That is exactly what Columbus Day does and it's not ok.

In the fourth letter, he speaks about what he will bring back.

Perhaps Columbus has a greater vision of what the island could become. He says in another letter that he is making progress communicating with them using hand motions and stuff, but it is implied that since they do not speak the same language, it is difficult to speak with them.

It is hard for me to decide whether or not to say we should celebrate Columbus day, because he was not a good person to many people.

1. Columbus' letter illustrates his arrival to what he thought was India. Throughout the letter Columbus tells Ferdinand and Isabella that his arrival to the islands was a happy and joyful event. In the first part he talks about the island Guanahan which he said he named San Salvador. Next he talks about the island Espanola and how gold was found on that island. In the last couple paragraphs he talks about having captured some Tainos and made them learn Spanish so that they would be able to understand each other.

2. Columbus describes the island of Espanola to be so beautiful that no one would believe its beauty. I think he describes it like this because he wants to make sure Ferdinand and Isabella continue to fund his explorations. If he were to say that the land is horrible and disgusting then Ferdinand and Isabella would think his exploration was a failure and they would make him come home.

3. He describes them as if they were willing to give up everything for Columbus. He says that even though some of the men they had captured had been traveling with them for a while that they continued to think Columbus had came from heaven. Columbus illustrates the Indigenous people as to be calm and peaceful people who passively give away their power and home.

4. I do not think we should celebrate Columbus Day because I don't think we should celebrate a man who enslaved and slaughtered so many people. Yes he did "discover" new land and the America's would not be where they are today without him but then again there were already many people on that land so he really only discovered it for the Europeans and not everybody. The holiday is somewhat subjective because all the Europeans believed he was this great hero and therefore a holiday about his discovery was created. I think if we are to celebrate the discovery of America then we should not just call it Columbus Day because that just makes it about him.

1. In Columbus' letters to Ferdinand and Isabella, he describes a place that is full of riches. He also states that he "took possession [of the island] without resistance", and that he would be bringing back items such as gold and spices. Throughout his entire letters, he leaves out the larger, bleak details and seemingly exaggerates the good.
2. He describes the island as very fruitful and beautiful, with lots of rivers, fields, and trees. I believe he describes the island like that because he wants Ferdinand and Isabella to believe it is wonderful and very useful so they can fund more of his explorations.
3. Columbus describes the Tainos as sort of passive and peaceful, just letting him take over the island without fighting back. He also writes about them in the third letter as praising him, believing him to be a "celestial race".
4. I do not think we should celebrate Columbus Day because he enslaved and killed Tainos, who were native to the island they landed on. Also, people had been living in the Americas for some time and he did not, in fact, discover the continents.

In the letters he is saying how he found a lot of riches on the islands and his success in finding all of them. He never talks about the way he treated the natives of the islands.
2. He describes the island of Espanola as this big island filled with abundant fruit and riches. He is describing the island to them this way because he doesn't want Ferdinand and Isabella to think that they spent their money on something that isn't right.
3. He says that he took them by force so that they can learn his ways and he says that even though they have been traveling with them for a long time they still think that Columbus has descended from heaven. He describes them as being good people.
4. I don't think that we should celebrate Columbus day. What he did to the Tainos was awful and I don't want to celebrate someone who is not kind or just to people. I think that it would be better if we named the holiday something else and just celebrate the day as being the day the english found a new world.

1. In Columbus' letters to Ferdinand and Isabella, he details the highlights of his journey to what he believes are "Indian islands". He emphasizes his success in demanding and taking control of the native people and their land, the beauty and bounty that the islands provide, and his hopes to acquire as much wealth as possible.
2. Columbus describes the island of Espanola as heaven on earth, offering greater prosperity than one could imagine without seeing it himself. He exaggerates so greatly with the motive of gaining more funding and support from the king and queen and appealing to their natural desire for wealth; he presents this island as the perfect investment.
3. He portrays the indigenous population as naive and trusting, believing him to be a prophet of sorts sent from the gods. They show compassion to him, a stranger, and offer their food and admiration without hesitation.
4. This article forced me to think deeper, attempt to empathize with Native Americans and understand how a holiday like this might affect them. If I felt that the decline of my culture was being celebrated, even glorified, I no doubt would feel off-put and disrespected. However, I don't believe that the intent of this holiday, like so many things in todays society was malicious; it was to remember our country's beginnings and honor what we now know as the United States. It's a shame that the decimation of a whole culture played such a large role in the creation of our society, and I feel that there are more inclusive ways to honor and respect the inhabitants who came before Columbus.

He briefly mentions the "Indians' and his interaction with them. He describes the Indians and peaceful, although tentative at first, and as if they were elated to have Columbus and his men there. Columbus speaks fondly of them due to the initial praise he says received.

Goodbye Colombus:
I believe that Columbus day should be celebrated, but instead of just celebrating Columbus other cultures should be celebrated as well.

1. In Christopher Columbus' letter to Ferdinand and Isabella, he attempts to give a brief explanation of his journey. However, he seems to veil over the topics of enslavement and disagreement with the native peoples. He also flat out lies about the way the people treated him, as he says, "both women and men, children and adults, young men and old, when they got rid of the fear they at first
entertained." He sums up the letter by reminding them of his faith and committed Christianity, to make them happier.
2. Columbus speaks of the island as though it were made of money. He describes all of the luscious vegetation and room for agriculture, the gold and other metals, the cotton, and other valuable goods. He wants Ferdinand and Isabella to be pleased with the land he claimed for Spain, for then they will fund more trips.
3. Columbus describes the Tainos as friendly, kind, and willing to be overpowered. He doesn't want the monarchs to think he is having any trouble with ruling the land. He says the people practically worship them.
4. After reading this passage, I better understand how natives take Columbus day quite personally. I think Columbus day isn't necessarily celebrating the enslavement and slaughter of the Native Americans as much as it is meant to celebrate the beginnings of our country. However, I do believe we can celebrate that without celebrating Christopher Columbus himself. This article said that many people act as if the natives were living as savages, and that is completely offensive to the natives that still celebrate and embrace their heritage. In conclusion, I believe we should not celebrate Columbus Day because of the brutal acts Columbus performed upon the Native Americans.

1. In Columbus' letter he gives a run down of his voyage. He describes when he first finds the island and how it is largely populated. He also discusses how he had to enslave the "Indians". Columbus says that they have to learn his language and that they have to find an alternative way to communicate. He ends his letter with a summary making promises of what he will do next.
2. Columbus wants to make the island seem as luxurious as possible to impress Ferdidnand and Isabella. He makes the island sound like everything they could want. He says that there are both beautiful mountains of large size and vast plains. Columbus makes the island sound like easy living, and there should be no troubles.
3. Columbus describes the people as kind and caring. He makes it seem like they were overjoyed when he arrived and made parade like gatherings in honor of him. He says that they brought him food. He makes it sound like a win win situation for both groups of people.
4. I think that it was wrong what Columbus did and I do not think that Columbus day is celebrating the enslavement or killing of the Taino people. I do think it is celebrating him colonizing and over all starting our country. The Indigenous people have a good point about how he did not discover the land, but he did make it into the country it is. I think the Taino people should also be celebrated, but I don't think that the Columbus Day holiday as a whole should be demolished. A different name might be a good idea so it is thought of less of a celebration of Columbus himself and what he did to the Taino's and more of a celebration of the start of a country

1. In the first letter that Christopher Columbus wrote to Isabella and Ferdinan he talked about how every was going so great and he casually mentions how he had to force the natives tp speak their language. The way that he doesn't mention that the Taino people are basically his slaves digest me. He also says nothing about how people are starting to get sick and die because of these new diseases that they introduced.

2. I feel that he is trying to make the island seem more majestic and beautiful than it is so that the king and queen would fund another exploration.

3. When Christopher Columbus talked about the native people he made taking a some of them by force seem like not a big deal when in reality its horrible. he then talks about how when they arrived to another island they Indigenous people praised him and referred to him as a something that descended from the sky , he then said, " they cried out, come, come and look open the beings of a celestial race' which is most likely not how they reacted.

In the letter, Columbus talks about how beautiful the land that he just discovered and named was. He also explains on how he took the Indians by force so that he could teach them his language so that they could tell him what they knew about the island.
2. He describes the island as a beautiful discovery with mountains and fruitful fields. I think he describes it this way because he's very proud of his accomplishment of finding such a wonderful place like this.
3. He describes the indigenous community as very helpful and beneficial towards teaching him stuff about the island.
Although it is cool to not have school on Columbus Day, I think that as a country we shouldn't celebrate it. I fell like it is very disrespectful to Native Americans since Christopher Columbus enslaved

1. Colombus' letter gives you a descriptive sneak peak on what he had discovered in El Salvador, or in his words, India. He had felt so accomplished that he felt entitled to name and claim four islands. He successfully established a powerful connection with the natives and ended up being greeted with lots of goodies from them. However, he had to leave a lot of people and things behind to leave things under control.
2. He describes it like it's the best thing he's ever seen, almost like it's too good to be true, because he isn't used to seeing it where he lives. He felt strongly that this was the perfect opportunity to snatch some riches by convincing the king and queen that it was wildly majestic.
3. He says he's greeted and welcome, and so he took some of them and successfully established a connection. Within a short time, he was able to communicate with them. They got the idea that he had descended from heaven, so they treated him with kindness, greeted him with food, drinks, and other nice things.
Goodbye Colombus:
I do not believe that Colombus Day should be celebrated for an infinite amount of reasons. What he did was nothing special, since he had stepped onto an island that was already inhabited by a couple hundred people
