While reflecting on Beth Harmon's journey in The Queen's Gambit illustrates that recovery from substance abuse is possible through connection and purpose. By the end of the series, Beth maintains sobriety with the help of her friend Jolene, highlighting the importance of supportive relationships in overcoming addiction. Connection, as discussed in class, is crucial for clients struggling with substance abuse, and attending a self-help group would provide Beth with continued support. Additionally, her chess skills improve when she is sober, demonstrating how focusing on personal passions can aid in recovery. Overall, Beth's story shows the potential for lasting change when clients have both support and meaningful outlets.

Another reflection that occurred while doing this presentation is that having a healthy routine can help maintain sobriety. In The Queen’s Gambit, Beth’s sobriety is aided not only by her emotional connection with Jolene but also by adopting a healthier routine. By incorporating physical activity and proper nutrition, Beth is able to focus on self-care, which plays a key role in her recovery. A structured routine can help clients manage their cravings by providing stability and distraction from substance use. Exercise boosts mood and reduces cravings, while healthy eating supports overall well-being. This holistic approach, combining emotional support with physical care, can significantly improve a client’s chances of maintaining long-term sobriety.
