This shows the way Ponyboy thinks Darry feels about him. Darry, his much older brother, and Ponyboy never had the best relationship after their parents died in a car accident, but of course, Ponyboy doesn't really speak up.

This shows his loyalty to Ponyboy.

This shows how Johnny wasn't ever really educated, Ponyboy had opened his eyes more and taught him to appreciate nature more. 

"We're goin' back and turn ourselves in."
This shows the bravery coming out of Johnny. After hiding for days because of the crime Johnny had commited, he had the courage to come to his senses.

Johnny ended up dead, after getting severe burns from the church fire. Ponyboy for a moment couldn't accept the fact that Johnny had ended up dead. He tries to take the blame for killing Bob, the Soc, but everyone knew the truth. This shows how Ponyboy was willing to take the blame, even after Johny's death.
