      <description>A Millennium Leadership Institute Fellow with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, Dr. Rodney D. Smith holds a doctor of education in education administration, planning, and social policy from Harvard University. He also has a master of arts in clinical and educational psychology from Fisk University. Dr. Rodney D. Smith received a bachelor of arts in psychology from St. John’s University.

The president of the University of The Bahamas since 2014, Dr. Smith initiated infrastructure developments such as a centralized student services center, a sustainability research facility with six laboratories, and a graduate studies center. Additionally, he successfully raised significant funds for numerous campus expansion programs. Utilizing research from a National Development Plan, for which he served as co-chair of the steering committee, he helped create a university governance structure that ultimately aided the school’s transition from college to university.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Smith led Ramapo College of New Jersey as president and CEO, implementing the school’s first strategic plan and reorganizing the College Foundation Board. He also served as administrative vice president of the historically Black institution, Hampton University. Outside his professional responsibilities, Dr. Smith enjoys gardening and reading nonfiction.
