Imagine you are Henry David Thoreau, living in a cabin in the woods. Write a diary entry, in which you will speak about your day, your activities and your feelings. You must refer to Transcendentalist concepts like self-reliance, the over-soul, minimalism, love of nature etc. Write at least 20 lines. You may include pictures.

Dear Diary
I woke up this morning to the mesmerizing sounds of the birds and the river current. Curious by these wonderful sounds, i walked out in the forest and enjoyed a cool swim in the water. I watched all these strange animals habiting the place where i caged myself in solitude. I picked up some berries to prepare my breakfast. After a pleasure morning spent in my small cabin containing only a small bed, a small chair and a small table i wennt for a walk. My goal during this walk was to feel the connectedness to God found in Nature. While walking on the leef filled ground I could feel my soul becoming one with God and Nature. Satisfied by this blessed walk, I went back to my cabin at around seven p.m. , I am guessing it was seven since I did not bring a clock that would just distract me from the environment. I had a small dinner made of different leaves and nuts. Whille eating this diner I am writting in this small diary.

My outings have begun to bear their fruits. It is undeniable for me now that my mind has entertwined with the Forest's.
I was tending to the vegetable patch when a windy breeze carried me along with it, and I began to tread the lands that I am part of, the lands that are part of me.
I found myself in a wildfield. The beauty of plantal diversity and the opulence of smells overtook me and I had to sit down. I thought to myself, 'All richness must be like this wildflower field. All excess must be of Nature surrounding us. All lavishness must be but an expression of Nature's artistic creation. No more do we need than what we may find in a wildflower field.'
When I returned to the Cottage — it is no exaggeration when I say that,— colours seemed more vibrant. I read and wrote. Through these — ink on paper — I came to the awakening of a next possible destanation. I had been only half-open to All of Nature. I was reading the words of Edna St Vincent Millay, when she said 'April Comes like an idiot, babbling and strewing flowers.' I felt like April, preaching beauty and perfection when I had only lived my very first spring in a temperate climate.
I know now, that to know and understand myself further, I must know Nature further. I must travel. Will I find the beauty of the Earth so soft as I find it now? Will the desert climates blemish my thoughts upon a flower? Will the freezing cold teach me that I am not only wildfields and sunny days, but scorching cold and hopeless nights?
I have only been half-living, and now, in my thought, I begin to live again.
Estelle

Dear Diary

I woke up today to the sound of birds chirping and leaves rustling. I love the solitude of my simple cabin that I built with my own two hands. I made myself a breakfast of sausages and fried potatoes. The meat was from a pig that I had hunted and the potatoes from my garden. How satisfying it is to live off the land!

After breakfast I took my daily walk to the pond. The pond is a magical place where I could spend hours on end, becoming one with the nature surrounding me. As I gazed at the still water this morning, I saw a rainbow trout. The rainbow trout is an extraordinary looking fish that lives up to its name. The longer you stare at one, you can see the different colors of the rainbow and the light reflecting off of one is mesmerizing. I truly find them fascinating and I usually go and swim with them if I can, to be one with nature in a way that I know how.

While swimming I often see the amazing wildlife of the forest coming to the water’s edge to drink. I usually see deer, and occasionally I catch a glimpse of bears. Sometimes the bears are running after the deer. Thank God they are not after me!

I spent several hours at the pond today, listening to the sounds around me, watching the animals. I was struck by the beauty of it all, and felt compelled to put pen to paper and draw some of what I was seeing, like the rainbow trout. All of the sudden I was starving and realized I needed to go hunting to replenish my stock of food. My hunt was successful as I was able to shoot a pig rather quickly. I was proud to have provided for myself in this way.

The hunt marked the end of the day and I returned to the cabin, tired but pleased with myself. What a day to remind myself of the simple beauty of Nature and the incredible circle of life! One doesn’t require much in life, just a place to sleep and a way to live off the land.

My walk back to the cabin was slow and calm, filled with the sounds of the birds chirping and of the leaves crunching underneath my feet. Once back in the cabin, i prepared lunch, picking which berries to eat.
I spent the beginning of the afternoon meditating on the carpet I made by weaving vines.
A couple hours later, i went for a swim in the lake and watched the fish. I sincerely believe we could learn a lot by just sitting down and observing other species.
I spent the evening thinking about fish and how they rely entirely on themselves.
For diner, I had some more berries.
It has been a good day and i think that I might not go back to society so quickly, I still have so much to learn about nature, self reliance and myself.

I wasn't woken up by the songs of the birds this morning. In fact it was the pouring rain, falling on the autumn red leaves that ended my sleep. As I got out of my cabin I could see how the season of heat, flowers and sun had come to an end, letting sad and calm weather takeover the sky. The more I walked, the less I could feel the drizzling on me. I know how days can be long, and painful if I don't put in the work necessary as soon as I wake up, so I started my day ignoring this natural shower. Yes natural, that's what I told myself, and that was the exquisiteness of my life, all was atypical. Atypical doesn't have to mean bizarre. Atypical is doing what the society doesn't do, but does that have to mean that customs are good ? Can’t the straightforwardness of my life be enjoyable. And because I don't do what the public wants from me, does that signify my existence is pointless ? Maybe. But my life is beyond comparison for me to give a second thought to the judgment of society. As a matter of fact, history would forget me, my ideas, nevertheless, I have given my life what it wanted; to destroy my destiny, and live here, in the woods. Here the birds don't sing for us but for them. Here the rain falls on earth more than on brick. And all these thoughts occupied my day, making it once again, uncomplicated and true.

Dear Diary, after waking up this morning, everything seemed different than it had recently. I have begun to grow tired of this lifestyle. I couldn’t pinpoint the amount of time I have been living in this forest if I tried, and believe me, I’ve tried.
I decided, after taking my daily bath in the river, that i needed to connect with the animal life around me. Instead of hunting, I went and gathered berries. I listened to the birds chirping, sounding like musical conversations. I found a raven chick that had fallen from his tree and put him back into the nest where his 2 siblings were waiting. They chirped happily upon being reunited with one another, and when their mother arrived, they all looked like a perfect family. That is why I have decided to return to the city. Although I disagree with the actions of humanity I will go back to my old lifestyle, and as a bonus I will be able to continue spreading my cause to the world. And, greatest of all, I may be able to have what those chicks and their mother had, something I hadn’t realized how much I had missed: love and a family.

Dear Diary,
It's been exactly one month since I left my old life and I don't think I will ever get used to the beautiful sound of nature in the morning. The birds chirping, the water flowing, the trees rustling... Some people might say that living with only oneself would make them go insane but disagree. My own company is all I need, if anything what was driving me insane was the constant need to live up to society and people's norms.

Today I went out into the woods to find food and was happily surprised by a very large amount of berries that were ripe, and I was able to get back home with a fair amount of them. Then I went to the lake to try and catch some fish and was able to catch two beautiful trout, that will be my lunch and dinner. I also decided to continue my studies of nature. I observed the animals, the trees and the lake water. All of these studies are extremely interesting, and show much more complex and, honesty, overall fascinating results then any study I would have done in the current society. I hope that one day more people will be able to have their eyes opened like mine are.
