We learn to see differences in skin color and other features at the early age of 6 months old. If a white teacher is saying this (and I am assuming they are since 80% of teachers are white and this is a very white thing to say), then they have been socialized to place value on these differences. Values that are rooted in white supremacy. It takes a lifetime of unlearning to shake these implicit biases. Also, being color blind ignores, and denies the cultural background and identity of the students of color as well as the injustices, both historic and present-day that they face.

First off, this statement assumes that each group of students listed is a monolith. There are cultures, within cultures, within cultures, it would be impossible to teach to the distinctive culture of each student. Also, it is assuming the teacher knows everything about everyone's distinctive culture which is most likely not true and can be harmful. I think teachers should leave ample space in their teaching for their individual students to bring (if they feel safe enough) their own distinctive culture to the classroom. Like a potluck of culture!

All voices in our classrooms have value and contribute to the conversations and learning that happens. Encouraging all voices through small group work provides opportunities for those students to develop confidence in speaking in a smaller, less threatening manner. Incorporating different cultures into lesson plans may provide students with an opportunity to be considered an 'expert' in that culture. As educators, we should be encouraging all students to be heard while maybe not focusing on picking those students. There are other ways to get a conversation going in a classroom than just asking questions and picking on students to answer them.

As a math teacher, I will provide problems and examples that pull from the combined culture of my classes as much as possible. Nobody wants to read a word problem about Bill and Mary. However, if I use names and objects that are culturally tied to students in my classroom, they will be able to "see themselves in the math", which draws them in and makes it more personal for them. We have spent too long teaching school from the viewpoint of older, white Europeans. It is about time that we stop doing that.

It is impossible to be colorblind about race & ethnicity. It would not be right to try to wash our ethnicity and race of a people. It has actually already been tried before, when the U.S. government tried to destroy native languages, religions and culture by kidnapping native children and sending them to basically white washing schools. It was a tragic and terrible system that damaged and in many cases ruining the cultural identity of those peoples. Rather than the descendants being happy white like clones, those people have only become angry that part of their identity and heritage was destroyed. To try to make blacks or latinos/latinas adapt would be equally damaging and shortsighted. The differences are what make our country stronger, not weaker. We should celebrate those unique differences as part of a great 31 flavors or tossed salad.

I disagree with this statement.

Wealth within the United States is unequally distributed by race, particularly among white and Black households. Black households have a fraction of the wealth that white families have. There are many reasons for this, such as Black households having far less access to tax-advantaged forms of savings, partially due to a long history of discriminatory practices such as in employment. Black people have less access to stable jobs, good wages, and retirement benefits at work, all of which are very important ways in which American families are able to gain savings. On top of that, white people have the benefit of centuries of privilege. One of the most obvious ways this manifests within school districts is funding. The Housing Act of 1949 encouraged white movement to the suburbs, meaning that in modern times the "better funded" schools of the suburbs are mostly white.

I completely disagree.

So often, it is the burden of educators of color who are expected to support students of color which creates a lot of extra emotional labor for them. White educators, if they assume that educators of color will do this work for them rather than taking it on themselves if they see it at all, they increase the workload of their colleagues. On top of this, educators of color are also expected to take on antiracist work within their school districts, even if their white colleagues think of themselves as anti-racist, and educators of color are more likely to be questioned about their competence especially if they discuss anti-racism within the classroom. By opening up conversations about race between colleagues, we can help to lift the burden of it from educators of color and educate ourselves.

Although teaching every subsect of culture in depth is impossible. I think all would benefit from some broad cultural introduction, perhaps have different cultures covered in different terms or months or it might be more practical to have the school give in depth classes for a whole year. For example in HS, to have (in any order) Frosh year European/Middle eastern-US, Sophomore year African-Black US, Junior year Native-Latino/Latina US, Senior year Asian -Asian U.S.
During which in those years the kids would be focused on the history, music, foods, society, culture and so forth with some kind of year summary presentation on what they want to focus on, lower grades might end up with a party of the culture's food and music. Even that I'm sure wouldn't be perfect. The problem is either we teach all cultures or none, but if we teach none, then the local culture is all that is impacting the students for the whole time they are in school cause they are getting that outside of their classroom/homework.

This is America......
I strongly dislike people who make that statement.
The fact is that some cultures do not have the students question the teachers, Japan is one. Then the student gives all their questions to the teacher after the class. The problem with that in our country is our teachers calculate how we understand the lesson that's been read by the types of conversation that the students engage with the teacher and each other. In Japan the teacher just presents the material as it is rock solid. In the U.S. we are taught to interact and question each other's stances and viewpoints with the goal of respectfully coming to enlightenment or a decision from that back & forth communication. Also often our class participation grade of around 10% is attributed to how we interact in class. In Japan I saw kids sleeping in class with their recording devices going....

I think that the ultimate reason for taking college courses is to prove that we have achieved a certain level of competency to be employable. Otherwise what is the reason to go through a college course? People who are challenged by a courses' language should take language classes or perhaps take classes as an Audit.

I believe people should be encouraged to do their best in school, that teachers should offer times outside of class when they can meet and be accessible for emailed questions. That said, if the bar for grading work is dropped to just "well they tried", but even thought hey didn't produce work that is quality, what we are doing then is punishing those who can do good work and eventually every one might do the absolute minimum in order to get the easy grade than push themselves to do great work.

I believe that this mindset can be dangerous for multiple reasons. First, students should be challenged to do assignments and lessons that are outside of their initial understanding; although the growth could be 'painful,' it is worse to never challenge them and only have them working on things that they already know that they can do. Preparing them with the life skills of 'getting back up again' after falling/failing is crucial. Additionally, while it is probably a good practice to know where the limits of students' understanding is, if I assume that my student doesn't know how to do something and I accordingly 'protect' them from the discomfort of failure, I am essentially not only robbing them of that potential lesson but I may also be wrong to assume that they could not have risen to the occasion.

Whatever the subject area is, I believe that a solid bedrock of foundational skills is what allows for the more complex learning tasks to actually have an impact on their learning. If a task may be too complex for a student or group of students, it might be better to reinforce the foundational skills before moving on to areas that are complexities of those initial lessons. This isn't to say that complex learning tasks and environments should be avoided, but 'jumping into the deep end' of a subject where a student isn't ready to make the leap will not give them the same educational return on their time, and may actually be damaging to their psyche if they feel that they were asked to do something far outside the range of what they were ready to do. A little challenge is good, but only if they have a solid foundation from which to go from.

I disagree that this situation would undermine my ability to teach these students. A student’s personal background and home life certainly will impact how they come to school and the support they need, though. Students from homes where academic achievement is not a priority need support and encouragement from school staff to ensure they feel like they can be successful in our classrooms.
-Kimberly Moisan

It's unfair to assume a child's parents/guardians simply don't care and don't want to participate. Many are unable to due to work, language barriers, and an overall disconnect with schooling. Many immigrant parents did not receive an American education and have no idea how to support their children, especially when they don't understand the material, language, or approach. Parental support should not affect how a teacher teaches students. I've had countless teachers who never met or interacted with my parents, yet I was able to fully participate in their classes.

A class is created to be a certain level, intro to a language or math or history, etc. If a student is struggling, a teacher should encourage them to utilize tutors if available, perhaps set time aside outside of class when the teacher can give extra assistance. Encourage everyone to ask questions and to ask questions that will elicit student feedback. If students feel they cannot do something, help them with their weak areas.

I think all humans are unique and might have unique learning styles, cutting it by ethnicity is not really appropriate though, each person, regardless of ethnicity have ways to study that feel comfortable. If their way is not working, that is when a teacher might suggest alternate ways to learn or perhaps ask professional folks from the same ethnicity that might work better.
