Castellanos is a Mexican artist who creates intricate and colorful paintings that explore themes of identity, gender, and culture. Her work is often described as "magical realism" and has been exhibited in galleries around the world. Looking at her paintings, she fills them with iconic objects, and the harmony between butterflies and human used here to form a fantastic and dreamy atmosphere was enough to draw my attention. In addition, the combination of bright and vivid color combinations and simple structured paintings as well as solid painting styles expresses splendor and beauty at the same time.

I like this painting because it makes a piranha look utterly terrifying. I like how the mouth is huge and the teeth are white and sharp. I like how the back of the piranha has corals and other stuff behind it. I like how the tweet mentions it is based on "old maps of sea sear pants", which makes the painting more "atmospheric" and has more meaning than a scary piranha. I also watched Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio" and it looked visually stunning, so I'm happy MoMA is sharing the craft and art in making the movie.

This artwork, Smile, uses dark and bright colors to shape the differences between each part of the artwork. It shows that there were multiple actions going on. The left side shows, people are crowded around a person and it's flipped over with ropes tied in the legs; it is a suffering process. On the right side, is a man concentrating on his work and enjoying his observation. Each of their emotion creates a strong comparison between them. The somewhat like technology in the middle is the connection between the man to outer environment. The use of color and the unique appearances created by the artist caught my eye.

"Swan Reflecting Elephants" by Salvador Dalí is a fascinating artwork. It uses colors to create a dreamlike scene. On the left side, there's a swan floating on water, but its reflection in the water shows elephants instead of a swan. It's like a magical illusion. On the right side, there's a calm and realistic-looking elephant. This contrast between reality and imagination makes me wonder about what's real and what's not. In the middle, there's a peaceful lake, which acts like a mirror for this strange transformation.

My first impression of "The Lovers II" was mystery and intrigue. The two figures are tightly embraced, but their faces are hidden, which creates a sense of tension and suspense. The white cloth covering their faces is also symbolic of the barriers that can exist in relationships, even between the most intimate partners. Also, the painting is simple. The background is plain and there are no other objects in the scene, which focuses all attention on the two lovers.

One of the elements I liked about this painting is that it takes a landscape drawing like rivers, mountains, trees, etc. into a "cubist" sort of art style. Reading more about the artist, he mostly worked in oils and was known for his landscapes where he practiced the modernist style creating wedges of paint which formed vast, still landscapes. Quote from him, “I'm an artist who believes in infusing something new in each of his work rather than sticking to the tried and tested singular palettes.” This quote reflects the landscape painting a lot, as it isn't traditional or done by many artists. There are ridges/wedges in each part of the painting, such as the mountains, trees, and even the sky.

“Guernica” is a powerful anti-war painting created in response to the bombing of the town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso’s use of bold lines black-and-white contrasts creates a sense of chaos and despair, and the distorted figures and animals are a haunting representation of the destruction and suffering caused by war. I can feel that this work shows people who are suffering from the agonizing pain of involution and are trying their best to escape from the frame that has confined them for a long time, but they are stopped in their way by an invisible "boundary" and are also immobilized and unable to move. The dilemma of the unsuccessful escape is presented to the viewer in a very vivid and interesting way.

-Stephanie

This oil painting artwork is the medium I wanted to continue work and improve on. I am inspired by the water surface, where the artist uses bright and dark colors to create the lightning and reflection. I wanted to learn this technique from the artist and apply it in my artwork.

This landscape depicts different activities (boating, chatting, standing)that people are engaged with it. The face are blurred, only their gestures and genders can be identified. The artist mostly used darker colors such as black to paint the clothes of people, especially the women. This suggests that they could be higher class women. The people in this landscape creates a chilling atmosphere, where people are relaxing in this area, peacefully enjoying the beauty of nature.

The artist’s viewpoint while painting divided the 3 parts equally, where there is a portion of each scene. At the same time, it highlights the activities that people are entertaining.

The boats and the pavilion are painted dimensionally with the hard texture and rough surface clearly seen.

The forestry in the background is painted blurry, which suggest the strong wind that blows the trees because the trees are leaning to a same direction.

The nature of trees and water in this artwork reflect the lifestyles of people back in that time. The rough texture of the surface where people are standing shows how these were constructed before.

Nighthawks by Edward Hopper

Hopper often employed a method of sketching scenes he discovered in everyday life in the creation of his works. In his masterpiece, "Nighthawks," he creates a unique ambiance that is not easily accessible even in daily life, by portraying reality with a calm and isolated sentiment. This atmosphere allows us to step out of our ordinary lives and look at things from a different perspective, which is one of the reasons I chose this artist because I enjoyed this new appreciation. Also, in "Nighthawks," from each element of the painting, the bright light illuminating the cafe, the dark streets around it, and the lonely figures within, create a perfect harmony while contrasting with each other. This aesthetic harmony also makes the work stand out even more. The atmosphere and landscape expressed in this work allows me to reflect on my own emotions, experiences, and empathy, making the work interpretable in individual ways, and creating a distance that can be interpreted as my own story. This uniqueness of the work was the decisive reason for choosing this work. As I gaze into my memories of staying up all night and feeling lonely, and this artwork serves as a reminder that recalls my past memories. Although this artwork is conceptual but also technical, I was more attracted to the concept, the mood of overall impression.

He makes large numbers more quantifiable and in doing so, engages his audience to think about different things. Such as in this piece he explores the environmental issue and raises awareness of how human activity impacts on the environment.

I think that if I were to use the same technique and using another medium to create a mosaic, for example, make it into 3D that would be a good route to go.

"Barrier 04," 2017- Carl Krull

I like the idea of keeping things simple, and creating uniquely advanced visuals from simple mediums. Carl Krull is able to use "simply" lines to create a 3D shape and bring much more meaning. Compared to typography and stippling (which all have simlar concepts), this is not mainstream;a rarer sight to see in the art world. Krull draws inspiration from a diverse range of artists, each contributing to his distinctive style. Palle Nielsen, a Danish artist celebrated for his black and white woodcuts, influences Krull with a shared emphasis on vivid contrasts and bold visual impact. In Carl Krull's art, lines are more than just marks on paper. They are pathways for expressing deep meaning. By using sculptural techniques, drawing inspiration from various artists, Krull has become a talent for turning ordinary things into something extraordinary.

May 2023

This artist used graphite, pastel, pencil, gouache, watercolor for this art. This artist is motivated by the human being, more precisely the human body and its relationship to clothing, dress, fashion and fabrics. She prefers to arrange the work in series, reminiscent of masterpieces such as Gustav Klimt or Egon Schiele. Models are dressed according to a specific theme. I want to investigate from this artist is the media of presenting the artwork, she emphasize the socks on the models legs in color, the rest of the drawing is in black and white.

The Desk by David Hockney

Creation of time: 1984

Medium: photographic collage

Introduction: David Hockney decided to challenge himself with photography. The main aspect,” he said, “was the lack of time in [traditional] photographs. I had become very aware of this ‘frozen’ moment that was unreal to me. A photograph didn’t have life in the way drawing or painting did. And I realized it couldn’t because of what it is.” He was eager to break the medium's restrictions, and in 1980, he began creating his artworks, taking multiple images from different angles. The Desk is recognized as one of Hockney’s most ambitious and important joiners. Taken in 1984, the joiner depicts what at first glance appears to be a work desk, comprised of dozens of individual images that collectively imbue the desk with a deeply three-dimensional feel. By doing so, Hockney blurs the line between photography and sculpture. Similarly, the books and boxes atop the desk are portrayed from multiple angles and in different stages of being opened and utilized, infusing the image with the passage of time and movement.

Intention: Hockney emphasized his intention, where on the desk there is a book open to a page depicting Pablo Picasso’s Guitar, 1913, a superb example of Cubism. By positioning Picasso’s Guitar at the center of his own work, Hockney aligns The Desk, where he breaks conventions and further solidifies his unique contribution to the field of photographs.

Inspiration: For my second artwork, I want to make a collage that involves using different materials. I also want to use the color mood for The Desk, which is gloomy, dull, and a bit dark (but not too much). I want to do a collage that is a layer over a layer.

Man/Ready, Vietnam by Paul MAC Williams

"Man Ready, Vietnam" by Paul MAC Williams, an artist part of the Vietnam Combats Artists Program, is an artwork that is inspired by the Vietnam War, where the Vietnamese brutally and systematically tortured the North Americans. The artwork itself uses intense color palettes and dynamic brushwork. I like this artwork because the color is dominated by red and orange, giving the artwork a fiery and chaotic feel, which represents the violent and destructive nature of the victims of the Vietnam War. I think I want to do a collage with this (or maybe something 3d rather than 2d) as opposed to an oil painting because I have done it before and it would transform the technique into something completely different.
