This shows that their main fear is not what they should call the event or if they committed genicde, but what comes after. Additionally, Turkish scholars and other denialists reject the Western European consensus of up to 1.5 million Armenian deaths attributed to the genocide.

The Christian, Armenian minorities were referred to as infidels, however they were more successful than other Turks and that made the Turks resent the Armenians. The Turks also thought the Christian Armenians would be more loyal to christian leaders, such as the Russians who controlled an unstable border with Turkey. Then, Abdul Hamid II, obsessed with loyalty rose to power and said he would "Soon settle these Armenians." The Armenians protested and Turkish officials raided their villages and slaughtered them.
