Nonconformity

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." - Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Nonconformity"
________________________________________________________
Laney Boggs from the movie She's all that (1999) is a perfect example for nonconformity because she's different from the rest of the girls in the movie. She has this Greek looking style while other girls looked like a "prom-queen" or at least they tried to look like one. Laney is a well informed student who's very interested in the arts and becoming a painter. In the movie, she wears loose clothes and a ponytail but she doesn't really care on how she dresses. "I feel like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. You know, except for the whole hooker thing (Laney Boggs She's All That). It addresses the way she thinks and that shows a lot of how she is in a way that she doesn't sound conceited.

Laney's nonconformist message is represented by her style, looks, and personality. It relates to Emerson's quote because Laney is herself and she doesn't need anything else in her life but her paintings and father. It defines Laney's personality because no matter the circumstances she's living through that doesn't change her in any way. Throughout the movie Laney Boggs realizes that she's in love which means she changes her mind of everything.

Self-Reliance

"Be yourself; no base imitator of another, but your best self. There is something which you can do better than another. Listen to the inward voice and bravely obey that. Do the things at which you are great, not what you were never made for.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Self-Reliance"
________________________________________________________
For self-reliance, I chose an artist named Prince Royce. He was born in 1989 and throughout his teen years he worked so hard to get where he is now. He lived in a neighborhood full of bad influences but he did not let the bad stuff get to him. Royce is very unique compared to other artists. Yet, he still hasn't changed one bit since his professional career as an artist started in 2009. Royce worked for Sprint to record his own songs and Cd's. He did all that by himself. Until this day, he's still achieving his goals. In his tweet down in the bottom is some type of evidence that shows that he didn't stop doing what he loves.

Emerson's quote and Royce's personal life before getting famous are similar because Royce stayed true to himself and did things on his own. Prince Royce is a great example for self-reliance do to his hard work and dedication to become the amazing artist he is now. He grew up with divorced parents along with 3 siblings and that didn't stop him from taking care about them. Prince Royce achieved his dreams by himself, writing poems, and working to record his own songs and they actually payed off.

"Not until we are lost do we begin to find ourselves." - Henry David Thoreau, "Free Thought"
_______________________________________________________
"Amor Prohibido" (Forbidden Love) by Selena Quintanilla was released in 1994 and it would be an example of free thought because she expresses that when two people love each other it shouldn't matter where they come from. If they are rich or poor and from different societies it doesn't matter when there's true love. Selena's love was so real that she didn't care about the millions she had and her fame when she was with the one she truly loved. (Chris Perez)

Thoreau's quote relates to Selena's song because when her fame rise she found true love and she says that, "And when finally we are together, the two of us. Who cares what society will say. Here, the only thing that matters is our love." She's expressing her thoughts on society towards love. I think her message is represented by her works, personality, and most importantly her ideas on morality and society.

"Make the most for yourself, for that is all there is of you." - Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Confidence"
_______________________________________________________
In 1990, Oh, The Place You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss represents a lot confidence. It demonstrates the everyone has the ability to succeed and be confident in themselves. "You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." To me, it gives me a lot of confidence to do what I want to achieve since I don't have anything missing and I do have a brain and feet to accomplish that goal.

Dr. Seuss's book relates to Emerson's quote by both talking about doing all the possible things you can do while you can. You should believe in yourself to get to the place you want or need to. "You're off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So... get on your way!" This book has many pieces of writings that gives you confidence in yourself, like the one I provided.

"“The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Nature"
________________________________________________________
Paul Walker was a great example of the meaning nature. During his free time of acting, he loved anything that had to do with nature. For example, he loved the ocean so much, he would surf, snowboard, he will always be around nature. Even though he had a lot of movies in process he still made time to go and see nature.

Emerson's quote related to Paul's life because he was the happiest when the cameras weren't all over his face. He would escape from his famous life and go do some of his hobbies which included nature. This quote relates to him due to an interview he had and says, "I’m passionate about animals and I hunt too. It’s like I save and I kill. I’m a walking, talking contradiction. I’m all about preserving the environment but I’m racing cars on the weekend. I tell everyone I’m a gun-loving hippy." After one year of his death, his daughter Meadow Walker started a foundation because of him. "He studied marine biology and spent most of his free time in the ocean." It shows how he had a huge passion for the ocean and sea animals.
