     This is an example of hubris because the context of this passage is Gilgamesh speaking to Enkidu, who is having to come to terms with knowing he will die. Gilgamesh is arrogant in only thinking of himself and the pain he will suffer, instead of empathizing and caring for his friend who is losing his life for Gilgamesh. Only later does Gilgamesh realize the significance of Enkidu's sacrifice. These mortals that call on the gods show us an uncommon view, that the immortal beings don’t care terribly about the fleeting life of one mortal that might cause some harm. Many times people who go out on missions or adventures are okay with the thought of death until they are about to face it. They know the risk they are putting themselves at, yet it is not enough to stop them. Most of the time it works out for people and they survive. However, there are certainly times where it does not work out and when people are faced with death they get scared and cannot take it in. This is a key factor why people cannot overcome death. Another reason people cannot overcome death is that nobody knows what it is like after your dead. There is simply no way to explain it or understand it. In the passage Humbaba says, "Gilgamesh, a dead man cannot . . . ,". Humbaba does not know what a dead man can or cannot do because it has never been explained before. This passage was intended to be sung. The ellipses between the words from Humbaba are meant to inflict a dramatic pause when reciting the tablet.
