We typically hire 100+ Camp Counselors biannually, and we're finding that in this new job market it's proving to be a very difficult task. They can use them on their off-time and breaks, but not during camp.

1. Find the biggest staff competitors, see what they are paying their staff, match it, and sell them on the benefits of working at camp. (Ex. Target offered $15/hour and was the hot spot for young people to work over the summer. Day camp offered the same pay plus job satisfaction, great skills, mentorship, etc. Staff chose to work at camp!)
2. Found money to increase staff pay by getting rid of camper give-away shirts (still offered in store) and eliminating early bird registration (realized price wasn't the driving factor for registering early).
3. Help summer staff understand why you pay them what you do. In training, go over the annual report/budget for camp. This shifts the perspective from "you owe me this money and more" to "it is great that you pay me this much."
4. Don't be afraid to make mid-summer changes. If something isn't working, figure out how to make it better.
5. Decide what you will "ride the wave" on and what changes to make this summer. Identify your top priorities for this summer and hold on to other ideas for the future.

Someone in the A Shift in Mindset session mentioned grants for staff recruiting to help offset the costs of recruitment sites etc. Does anyone know where to find information on these?

How do you continue to engage seasonal staff in the off season to try to help retain them year over year when there is leadership turnover of the camp directors and administration and therefore the people with the relationship to them are gone?

What do people think about creating a common app so that an applicant fills out one application but it works for multiple camps?

We are a non-profit special needs camp outside of Austin, Texas. We recently started looking at becoming a partner organization with AmeriCorps, the NCCC program to help provide staffing for our summer program. We're in the beginning stages of this but wondering if anyone else has looked into this or utilized this organization for staffing and the pros/cons of it. Thanks! -Erin Flores, Down Home Ranch
