Back in ancient times, Greece was not the unified nation that we know today, but a collection of small city-states. A city-state is a city and the surrounding territory. The Greek city-states were constantly squabbling with each in an effort to gain more land. Despite this, the Greeks still managed to achieve some extraordinary thins such as the invention of democracy. They also came up with many of the core scientific ideas that we use today.

The Roman Empire was founded by a man named Augustus. During the early days of the Roman empire, things were very good for the general population. The people were content to have an authority figure and were not at all sorry to see the corrupt republic come to an end. Augustus built roads and improved education. He also invested huge sums of money into elaborate public works that kept his subjects happy.

The ancient Greeks, and the Athenians in particular are responsible for the founding of the first democracy the world has ever seen. Without democracy, our lives would be completely different that they are now. In most governments, there is one person or a handful of people who hold all the power. Democracy, however, is a system in which the people are the ones who really hold the power. Democracy has since been adopted my many nations around the world.

The Romans were also the first to built an extensive network of good roads. This not only helped them to move soldiers between trouble zones quickly, but it also encouraged people to travel and trade with each other. Increased trade meant that areas of the empire had access to goods that they might not have otherwise.

Athens was one of the largest city-states in Greece and it was here that the idea of democracy was born. The people of Athens, unlike the the warlike Spartans, were mostly concerned with improving education and civil services rather than making war with other city states.

Sparta was another large Greek city-state. Sparta was very different from Athens however. Its people were very warlike and most soldiers started training at a very young age and stayed in the army for the majority of their lives. The fact that men were often away at war allowed women in Sparta to have more control over their own lives that Athenian women usually did.
