Vito joined our school community in September 2023 after previously attending a county public school in the USA. He is a diligent student with a strong desire to excel academically. Despite his commitment to his studies, Vito faces challenges in expressing his ideas and initiating social interactions, particularly when engaging with peers during play and group activities.

In November 2023, Vito was diagnosed with Autism, a development that he is navigating with resilience and determination. Although he is eager to form friendships and establish connections, he experiences difficulties due to his limited understanding of play and restricted language and social communication abilities.

Vito has been receiving speech and language therapy within the school provided by an external specialist, along with intervention lessons from the lower school learning support department. These interventions aim to enhance his communication skills and support his social development, helping him to better integrate into the school community.

To see his music learning, I provide alternative ways to show his learning than by talking. At the same time, I try to support his language acquisition. If I will ask him to answer a question in class, it will be a direct question that requires simple answer to let him be successful and grow confident in speaking. When I see him in more casual setting, I just ask or talk him like all the other students, and give him the time to think and respond, whether verbally or not.

Vito responds well to visual aids and positive praise. During the end of the school year, Vito began giving and receiving advice from peers in the class. Vito was able to meet some objectives when working 1-1 but found it difficult to complete tasks, especially tasks using his ideas independently.

Vito's biggest achievement this year in class, I believe, was asking or requesting help and responding to answers with short simple sentences or words. It was a struggle for Vito to initially communicate when he first arrived at Harrow, however, with many strategies tried and tested I think this was Vito's biggest achievement. It helped him socially, emotionally and academicall.

Vito has made huge progress this year and has been open and excited to try new strategies. He has a lovely way about him and this was demonstrated throughout the year as he built on his confidence.
