It is widely excepted that Mount Vesuvius erupted on the 24 of august 79 AD. We know this date from a letter written by Pilny the younger who witnessed the event. Since he wrote these letters a while after the event his perception and memory might not be completely accurate. We also can't find the original letters anymore instead we rely on copy's done by monks in the middle ages. Even the copy's can't agree on the actual date.

This video goes into how the citizen of Pompeii died. Most people would believe that the main cause of death in Pompeii would be due to the lava. This is mostly due to when people think of volcanoes they think lava. The actual causes of death were from the ash clouds expelled from the volcano. The people breathed in the ash which would cause them to suffocate.

In this article researches discover how this headless man actual died. It was believed that the man must have been crushed by a block falling onto his head. Researchers have recently discovered that the block might have fallen on him during an earlier excavation in the 1700's. The cause of death was most likely the same as everyone else in Pompeii suffocation by clouds of super heated ash.

This articles states that the people of Pompeii seemed to be completely unaware that Vesuvius was actually a volcano. Although there where plenty of warning signs. The people left in Pompeii couldn't connect the earthquakes with volcanic activity. Even though the Romans had many rituals to predict the future they couldn't foresee this event.

This is an image from the 2014 film Pompeii. This film is definitely not the most historically accurate film for various reasons. One of them being that in this image the main characters would actually be covered in 10 feet of ash right now. These two people would not be able to stand let alone breathe. The cloud of ash and rock would have instantly knocked them to the ground.

This video shows another way that people might have died. The researches have found burn marks on the skeletons of the people of Pompeii. They say that the heat of the ash was so intense that the people died instantly. This Effectively froze the people in place in there last moments of life.

This image is an artistic recreation of Pliny the Younger writing his letterer to Tacitus. The main reason we have so much information on Pompeii is the eye wittiness accounts of people like Pliny. Unfortunately he wrote these letters 20 years after the eruption. So we cant say for sure that he remembers everything accurately. Not to mention the fact that most of his letters were translated by medieval monks that could have gotten the translations wrong.

This video shows an animated recreation of what it may have been like when Mount Vesuvius erupted. In the video it shows how the eruption started with a regular earthquake. Most of the city's residence where accustomed to minor earthquakes like this. Soon after the ground started to shake more violently causing the citizens to panic. A day or two later and the town was completely covered in ash.

This is an image of some of the people who died in Pompeii. One of the problems that researchers faced was how to preserve the bodies found in Pompeii. They came up with a solution that would preserve not just the bones, but what position they where in as well. They poured a plaster cast into the air pockets left behind by the decayed bodies. This preserved the positions they where in while they where dying.
