Grade school - 6-11

Junior High - 11-14

Senior High - 14-16

If students want to go to university (they call it college), they need to continue High school till they are 18 years old.

Average school day

The school day usually runs from 8 am to 3 pm. The school day starts with a ceremony. Pupils and teachers stand with their hand on their heart. They make a pledge of loyalty to the flag and country.

Like us, they also get homework. :D

School comunity

American schools try to create a strong sense of comunity. Schools have their own teams for American football, soccer, baseball, ice hockey and basketball. They usually have music bands, drama groups and cheerleaders. When schools play against other schools, it is a big event. Parents come to watch, the music band plays, cheerleaders dance. In college, they fly to other states to play other teams. Lot of players from college hockey make it to NHL.

State education is free up to age of 18, college is payed by parents, students often have jobs, like work in McDonald´s. There are some private schools, which are payed, but most of students go to state schools. Students of college are sometimes hundreds of miles away from their home.

End of education

When students finish school, they have graduation day. This is very big event. Students wear gowns and caps, their parents come to watch their children receiving their graduation certificates. At the end of High school, there is a big dance called the High school prom. They select their prom king and queen.
