The Quran is the Book of God, revealed to the Prophet of Islam in the first quarter of the seventh century. The Quran is not a mysterious blessing; it is a book of wisdom. In the chapter entitled Sad (Sad), the Quran says of itself:

كِتَـٰبٌ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَـٰرَكٌ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوٓاْ ءَايَـٰتِهِ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُولُوا ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ(29)

"This is a blessed Book which We sent down to you [Muhammad], for people to ponder over its messages, and for those with understanding to take heed" (38:29).

The Quran is, indeed, a book of wisdom, which gives us each detail of the divine scheme along with all those principles that are required for successful living on this earth. In short, the Quran is a book of guidance for mankind. It is, moreover, a simple book, which is easily understandable to anyone who has even the most rudimentary knowledge of Arabic. But all the things it has to offer can be discovered only through contemplation. It is contemplation, or tadabbur, that opens the doors of the Quranic treasure of knowledge. Then the Quran is marked by the most perfect clarity, but that does not mean that you can understand the Quran without pondering over it.

If you want to know the message of the Quran in a simple manner, then knowing its literal meaning will suffice. Its literal meaning will introduce you to the basic, practical advice offered by the Quran. This kind of knowledge is quite enough for the common people who are not of a scholastic bent of mind. Then there is the deeper side of Quranic meaning. This can be comprehended only after an in-depth study of the scriptures. The Quran is evidently a book of guidance for both the common man as well as for highly educated people.

There are Five Pillars of Islam which are the core beliefs and practices of Islam:

Profession of Faith (shahada). The belief that "There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God" is central to Islam. This phrase, written in Arabic, is often prominently featured in architecture and a range of objects, including the Qur'an, Islam's holy book of divine revelations. One becomes a Muslim by reciting this phrase with conviction.

Prayer (salat). Muslims pray facing Mecca five times a day: at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and after dark. Prayer includes a recitation of the opening chapter (sura) of the Qur'an, and is sometimes performed on a small rug or mat used expressly for this purpose. Muslims can pray individually at any location (fig. 1) or together in a mosque, where a leader in prayer (imam) guides the congregation. Men gather in the mosque for the noonday prayer on Friday; women are welcome but not obliged to participate. After the prayer, a sermon focuses on a passage from the Qur'an, followed by prayers by the imam and a discussion of a particular religious topic.

Alms (zakat). In accordance with Islamic law, Muslims donate a fixed portion of their income to community members in need. Many rulers and wealthy Muslims build mosques, drinking fountains, hospitals, schools, and other institutions both as a religious duty and to secure the blessings associated with charity.

Fasting (sawm). During the daylight hours of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, all healthy adult Muslims are required to abstain from food and drink. Through this temporary deprivation, they renew their awareness of and gratitude for everything God has provided in their lives—including the Qur'an, which was first revealed during this month. During Ramadan they share the hunger and thirst of the needy as a reminder of the religious duty to help those less fortunate

Pilgrimage (hajj). Every Muslim whose health and finances permit it must make at least one visit to the holy city of Mecca, in present-day Saudi Arabia. The Ka'ba, a cubical structure covered in black embroidered hangings, is at the center of the Haram Mosque in Mecca . Muslims believe that it is the house Abraham (Ibrahim in Arabic) built for God, and face in its direction (qibla) when they pray. Since the time of the Prophet Muhammad, believers from all over the world have gathered around the Ka'ba in Mecca on the eighth and twelfth days of the final month of the Islamic calendar.

The Six Pillars Of Imān In Our Life

1- Belief in the existence and unicity of Allah

It’s the first and most important pillar. To believe in Allah is to believe that there is only one God worthy of worship, with no partner, or son. This concept is known as Tawheed. Also, it is to completely believe in the way he is described in the Quran, Sunnah and in his 99 names.

Allah clearly explains Tawheed in the Holy Qur’an as He says in Surah Ikhlas:

“قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ، اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ ، لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ”

“Say, He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent.”

2- Belief in the existence of Angels

The second pillar is to believe in Allah’s angels. They are not his children as some may think. They were created from light and were created before humans for the purpose of worshipping Allah.

Angels do not sleep, eat or suffer from illnesses. It is crucial to believe in the angels, as they keep a record of our deeds. Some of the other duties of angles include: blowing the trumpet on judgment day, taking people’s souls (i.e. angel of death) and to be the keepers of heaven and hell.

3. Belief in the books of Allah

The third pillar is to believe in the books of Allah which delivered to the nations by the messengers. Allah revealed books to his messengers as a form of guidance and proof for mankind. Among these books, is the Quran, which was revealed to Prophet Muhammad.

Allah has guaranteed the protection of the Quran from any distortion or corruption and clearly mentioned that in the Holy Qur’an as He says in Surah Al-Hijr:

“إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ”

“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’an and indeed, We will be its guardian.”

4- Belief in Allah’s messengers and that Muhammad is the last of them

The fourth pillar is to believe in all prophets and messengers sent by Allah and that the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is the last of them.

Most of the messengers of Allah were sent to a specific nation except Prophet Muhammad, who was sent to guide all of mankind. It is a duty of Muslims to send salaams (Peace and Blessings of Allah) when mentioning the names of any of the Prophets.

5- Belief in the Day of Judgment

Muslims attest to the truth of everything Allah or his messenger, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said about death.

Allah has not created his creation in vain. He created men and jinn to worship him and promised paradise as a reward to those who obey him and his messengers, and promised hellfire to those who disobey him or his messengers.

Allah has set a certain period for the whole universe, whose end will be the final hour. During the final hour, humans will be questioned about their deeds in this world. Those deeds will be weighed for them. One whose good deeds overweigh his evil deeds will prosper, while whose bad deeds outweigh his good ones will be condemned to hellfire – unless he died in the state of Islam. Then, Allah would either forgive him or punish him, and eventually, he would enter paradise.

Allah described justice of the judgment day in the Holy Qur’an as He says in Surah Al-Anbya:

“وَنَضَعُ الْمَوَازِينَ الْقِسْطَ لِيَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ فَلا تُظْلَمُ نَفْسٌ شَيْئًا وَإِن كَانَ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِّنْ خَرْدَلٍ أَتَيْنَا بِهَا وَكَفَى بِنَا حَاسِبِينَ”

“And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.”

6- Belief in the Qadhaa’ & Qadr (Doom & Divine Decree)

Doom (Qadhaa’) is the general decree of Allah that every human shall die, whereas a divine decree (Qadr) is a particular decree of Allah or the execution of Qadhaa’, that a certain person is to die at a particular time and place. Hence, believing in this pillar entails believing that Allah has created everything and has foreordained its proper measure.

What Is Ihsān in Islam?

Ihsan is one of those words that can’t be translated into just one English word, but has a rather broad and deep meaning. We read in the Qur’an that [Allah loves al-muhsinin (those who do good)] (Aal `Imran 3:148). A muhsin is one who is generous, one who does good actions, and ihsan is goodness itself. Ihsan also means to perfect, to excel, or to show proficiency and excellence. Therefore it could be considered that the Arabic word ihsan has a dual meaning, goodness and excellence. We Muslims need to strive to achieve excellence, proficiency, and perfection in all good actions we make.

Maintaining ihsan is something Allah Almighty commands us to do; why is it, then, that sometimes we Muslims are the laziest or the sloppiest? Of course not all Muslims are like that, but it seems to be the current theme in our Ummah.

Muslims should participate in making this world a better place and we must have our contribution. Worshiping Allah isn’t only by performing rituals. For example, going to school or work every day could be a form of worship if your intentions are to obey Allah, acquire knowledge for the betterment of the Muslims and humanity, and be a good example of a Muslim. If we are not successful and at the forefront, how will we attract non-Muslims to Islam?

One meaning of ihsan is to do good actions, but when doing good we should also try to perfect it. For example, greeting another Muslim by saying “as-salamu alaykum” (peace be upon you) is a good act, but giving the complete form of the greeting “as-salamualaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh” (peace, mercy of Allah, and His blessings be upon you) is far better.
