Firstly named Edo, it started to develop after the Tokugawa Shogunate was established by Tokugawa Leyasu in1603. Because of Japan's politics and culture, Edo became a thriving city with over a million people by 1750. During this time, the Emperor stayed in Kyoto, the capital of the nation. Later in 1868, the Emperor moved to Edo, renamed Tokyo. Then, Tokyo became the capital city of Japan

Some of them include tsunamis, floods, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, typhoons and cyclones.
Tsunamis are the aftereffect  of an earthquake. They are caused by earthquakes moves the ocean floor. In 1993 a tsunami was caused by an earthquake. 202 people were killed and more were injured.
In 1923 Japan witnessed the most devastating earthquake. It wreaked havoc in the cities of Yokohama and Tokyo, killing over 100,000 people. Approximately 500,000 houses were destroyed.

There are underwater pressure sensors that trigger alarms when it detects a tsunami. On mainland people are warned early so they have time to evacuate.
