Cultural awareness involves recognizing both the differences and commonalities between cultures, especially when engaging in communication or interaction with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds (Raines, 2021a). This awareness is essential in combating stereotypes, biases, and misunderstandings that often arise from cultural differences.

Cultural sensitivity goes beyond simply knowing that differences exist—it involves involves inculcating values, attitudes, and knowledge that display openness and respect with those differences (Raines, 2021b). It means avoiding the idea that one culture is better than another and adjusting the way we speak or act to avoid offending others.

Language is one of the most direct forms of communication, but it varies greatly across cultures.(Guessabi, 2016). Differences can be seen in tone of voice, politeness, idioms, slang, and even silence. Using inclusive and respectful language, such as gender-sensitive or politically correct terms, ensures clearer and more respectful communication.

Much of communication happens without words. Gestures, posture, eye contact, personal space, and facial expressions all carry meaning, but their interpretation changes across cultures (Guessabi, 2019b). For example, direct eye contact may show confidence in one culture but be seen as rude in another. Being mindful of these cues prevents misunderstandings.

Culture shapes how meaning is conveyed and understood. In high-context cultures (like Japan), communication relies heavily on shared background, indirect hints, and nonverbal signals, while, in low-context cultures (like the U.S.), messages are more direct and explicit (Nadiger et al., 2024). Context also includes perceptions of time, punctuality, and whether interaction is local or global.
