This is the work of a Navaho artist who grew up on the Navajo Reservation. Look at his art and his statements, and try to explain your understanding of how and why the Navajo experience has caused the Navajo people to produce rugs that are considered works of art. ADVANCED: Consider your own experience, and share a way that your own culture has developed art and the experiences that shaped that art. by Jennifer Walker

Art is a Tool

Art is much like a story, whether it's a play, novel, book, song or piece of art the author and or creature uses their work as a tool to convey their message. The people who reside on reservations are known to be extremely poor, reservation economies always suffer. No matter what tribe they have a story of tears, their ancestors were forced from their lands and put into a barren, unwanted, and lifeless plot of land. So whatever the artist wants to convey from these tapestries it's most likely going to be on the more negative and pessimistic side ( because reservation life and society is hard). In some reservations they don't even have running water, some works of art could be looked at as when they had rich green lands before they were forced into reservations due to the guile and greed of the early Americans expanding westward. As for the tapestry of a man herding goats and sheep, That there everyday life, using hardy animals for clothes, food, and even milk. What we would see as a pretty picture of a “ cowboy” could be a young poor boy working for food for his family rather than going to school. Whereas the depiction of native people running could even be related to the trail of tears. By using dark colors in one's art you can relate it to dark themes or thoughts, the artist could be trying to provoke negative emotions in the person viewing the art, so people of a different culture could relate to their society and culture. However I do agree they are beautiful works of art, thank you for Enlightening and culturing the class.

Ty Allen

The Navajo rugs are more than art, its culture. So much though and design goes into making a single rug. The design and patterns on the rugs create a mesmerizing piece of art. I'm sure they are proud of all the generations they've passed this skill down to.

Anthony

I personally think it takes a lot of effort and talent to make the Navajo rugs. I think the colors they put on the rugs are really cool and the patterns are very interesting. From what I know about, Navajo people made their rugs look like events that have happened in them in the past and as well as they can use them for storytelling. I believe that the people that made the Navajo rug were very very talented.
