Our Production

Considering our Opening Sequence is not a big Hollywood movie, it would be fairly hard, if not impossible, to find a Production Company which would invest even a minuscule amount of money into our Production, however if I were able to choose a Production Company, I would like to choose one which has already produced thriller films, for example Paramount Pictures who produced Shutter Island.

Production Companies are essentially the people behind the films we see in cinemas today; they basically create the media for their audiences. Production Companies like Lionsgate, New Line Cinema and Paramount Pictures, as mentioned before, are regarded as some of the top producers within the film industry, especially in the thriller genre, therefore managing to gain their attention, from our Production, would ensure mass amounts of public and audience attention, as well as possible funding to perhaps make some of our scenes more aesthetically pleasing.

Being the Editor, it was my job to create the ident for our own Production Company we conveniently named "BCES Productions". The Ident I created represents our Private Production Company and a picture is featured below as well as other mentioned Production Companies

Introduction

If a film wishes to reach its audience in the cinemas it has to go through the process of Distribution, and this is essentially how a movie is made accessible to an audience through a film institution. Their a quite a few well known film institutions around at the moment, but essentially they are profit based organisations that create and distribute a film - every movie you see in cinemas has had to go through one of these organisations. The majority of these well known organisations are based in America, namely Hollywood. A lot of film institutions choose Los Angeles to be based as this is where a lot of films are filmed; because of the scenery, locations and weather, it makes it the ideal place to film a movie.

These institutions determine and control all the advertising for a film, this way they can branch out to different places in which they can attract their target audience for a particular film. Also, as well as advertising, these institutions market the film. The institutions take these jobs upon themselves so they can make the most money as they can basically, this continues for every film that finds its way into the institution.

Characteristics of a Good Institution

If a film wants to make the most money, and reach it's audience fully, it will need to be distributed in the correct way. That means, finding a company/person who is very reliable and is able to meet specific demands. When it comes to previously mentioned companies such as Paramount Pictures and Lionsgate you can be more or less assured that if they were to distribute your film, you would not have to worry, they are more than reliable.

For a big Hollywood film the Production Companies would most likely provide the funding for the particular film, but when it comes to much smaller films for example independent British films, they may need to look as well as these particular Hollywood institutions are not likely to fund them. There are various events and charities who will fund small films if they see potential in the film and can see it being successful; such places being the BFI's London Film Festival where it is possible to appeal for funding for your Production and obviously gain more publicity if you were to win an award. Jake Hume, a BFI speaker we have had the pleasure of meeting, is a good example of this. His film called Sixteen won an award at the BFI London Film Festival. If our group were looking to get our Production out there, we would perhaps use this Film Festival as a way of gaining attention and most importantly funding.

Institutions In Our Opening Sequence

Production Companies tend to have a very small clip which is featured before the actual film even starts, this is to provide the company credit for helping work on the film. The same goes for our Opening Sequence as it shows BCES Productions beforehand. The picture of this can be seen above, and a video clip below this text. This is to make the Production Companies associated (because their can be more than one) are noticed because after all, they do play a massive part in the creation of the film.

As mentioned before the Production Companies have their own small length clips before the film, as does the Director and Producers also associated with the film. Directors and Producers play big parts in the build up to the finished Production and have put tons of work into what is seen on screen, in our case the Opening Sequence of Ultimatum.

My Influence

We were all assigned jobs within our group so that we could all work on our own separate areas which we all excelled in, and not being the Director of the film I did not have the overall say in what was finalized, however I did make some valuable inputs and judgments where the Director, Daniel, agreed with me and changed certain parts around what I said.

Bearing this in mind, I did look to the actual companies who have previously produced Thriller films in the past. One of the examples I used was Paramount Pictures as they produced Shutter Island, as I have already mentioned, which is one of my favourite Thriller films. I chose to look at this specific Production Company as produces high quality Thriller films which are very popular. Being as popular as they are, with a very iconic Ident, they are able to deliver films end on end with no shortage of quality, because of the special effects and multiple Big Set Pieces which occur throughout the films.

Being able to bring an audience what they want and like to see means the audiences keep coming back again for the next film, and this is where I drew my influence from. If our group were to produce a high quality Opening Sequence which was quite popular, then the audience would continue to return if we continued to make any other form of Productions. Another thing I picked up on which I have channeled into our own Ident, is the use of sound and simplicity other Idents from other Production Companies use. Production Companies are able to produce a memorable 10-15 second ident through the use of a memorable logo and through the music/sound they play, a specific example being 20th Century Fox that play the orchestral music, and this becomes memorable and iconic. I did this with our ident also, but instead of using orchestral music, I used a loud abstract noise which plays twice, and combined with the length of the ident, it makes it a very memorable clip.
