Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice: Reflecting On Domain 7

As a nurse who is dedicated to giving the best care possible to a variety of patient populations, I frequently consider how I might better assist those who come from migrant and refugee backgrounds. The foundation for improving our professional practice is domain 7 of the competency standard framework for clinicians called culturally Responsive Clinical Practice: working with people from migrant and refugee backgrounds. I will concentrate on how I try to incorporate one of the competency requirements from this area into my nursing practice in this reflection (Mau, 2017).

Competency Standard: Domain 7 Professional Practice:-

Reflective Tool:- Applying Cultural Safety

The core of domain 7 is cultural safety, which emphasizes the need to create a setting where patients from various origins feel respected, valued, and understood. It enables medical professionals to critically assess their own assumptions and beliefs, creating an atmosphere that facilitates real interaction. I try to incorporate this competency requirement into my everyday nursing practice in the following ways:-

1. I often reflect on myself to discover my own prejudices and biases. It is essential to know that these biases can unintentionally influence patient care.

2. I will deliberately try to listen to my patients. This includes not only listening to say but also making an effort to comprehend their viewpoints, values, and cultural beliefs.

3. I value and appreciate my patient's diversity. Every person I look after brings their own particular set of cultural values and beliefs. I make sure that my method of care is flexible and adaptive in order to take into account each patient's culture and preferences.

4. I actively work to remove barriers to care, whether it be by ensuring access to interpreters, offering materials that are appropriate for the culture, or combating laws that support cultural competence.

Mau, V.
Understanding the Impact of Social Determinants on Migrant/Refugee Health in Australia

The multicultural nation of Australia welcomed migrants and refugees from all over the world. Even if this diversity strengthens our country, it is important to acknowledge the significant influence social determinants have on the health and well-being of these populations. The impact of social determinants on the health of migrants and refugees are as follows:-
1. Income and social protection:- Due to language challenges, unrecognised qualifications, or a lack of employment possibilities, immigrants and refugees frequently experience financial difficulties. Due to decreased income levels, they become more susceptible to poverty. Access to health care, wholesome food, and secure housing may be impacted by low income. It can have adverse effects on general well-being due to stress, mental health problems, and insufficient healthcare utilisation.
2. Education:- Children from migrant families could have trouble adjusting to the Australian education system. A lack of educational possibilities can limit one's ability to move up the social and economic ladder. additionally, it may have an impact on health literacy, making it more difficult for immigrants and refugees to understand the healthcare system and make wise health decisions.
3. Non-discrimination and social inclusion:- Discrimination and social exclusion can make refugees and migrant people feel alone and excluded. These difficulties may be exacerbated by discrimination and misunderstandings based on cultural and language issues. Social isolation can result in mental health problems, restricted access to medical treatment, and a reluctance to seek assistance when required. Additionally, it might lead to a decline in community involvement, impeding the growth of social support networks.
Improving the health and well-being of migrants and refugees in Australia depends on addressing these social variables. steps towards eliminating gaps include programs that encourage language skills, acknowledge foreign degrees, provide special career help, and create cultural competence among health care professionals. In addition to improving the lives of those who have made Australia their new home, tackling these social factors helps our country's overall health and prosperity. 🤝🌿
#MigrantHealth#SocialDeterminants#InclusionAustraliaWHO (2022) Social determinants of health

- external site opens in new window

, WHO, Geneva, accessed 17 January 2022.

Refugees frequently bring with them a distinct set of health challenges when they arrive in Australia due to their past experience, current living situation, and lack of access to health care in their home countries. The three typical health issues that a refugee who migrant to Australia from a Syrian Arab country might present, along with the treatment option for each.
1. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder:- Many Syrian refugees have gone through traumatic experiences, such as being exposed to violence, losing loved ones, and being moved. This can result in PTSD, which is marked by distressing emotions, intrusive memories, and hypervigilance. It can be treated with counseling, cognitive behavior therapy, and group therapy sessions can offer a safe space for discussing struggles and coping mechanisms.
2. Vitamin deficiency and malnutrition:- during the battles and their displacement, they suffered from food shortages and malnutrition. Nutritional rehabilitation is a vital component of treatment. Deficiencies can be addressed by giving refugees access to balanced food, nutritional counseling, and supplements (vitamin D and iron).
3. Health concern:- The lack of access to healthcare and vaccinations in times of crisis raises concerns about infectious illness. Syrian is one of the countries where hepatitis is very common. Ensuring that refugees are initially checked for infectious illnesses is very important. Antiviral medications and vaccinations can be started for hepatitis B, along with transmission and prevention instructions.

Citation
Australian Red Cross
110 Goderich Street, East Perth WA 6004
Phone 08 9225 8830 Perth
