The game environment is a town in the North of England, close to the east coast. It’s in what has recently been called a Red Wall area. It used to have an industrial base but much of that has now closed. The national government is Conservative, the local council is Labour but at the last general election a Conservative MP was elected for the first time in the history of the constituency. The Population is 20,034.

Turn One:

The prevalence of home working has caused many people to move out of the cities into smaller towns and villages seeking cheaper rents and housing. This includes your town, which has good transport links. The influx of newcomers, some coming from as far away as London, sees a sharp increase in house prices and rents causing a crisis for the pre-existing community. We are also seeing generational tensions with more longstanding residents tending to be older and incomers tending to be younger.

The Mutual Aid group gathered names for a petition for the local council to convert abandoned buildings into affordable housing - they got lots of names and the council are seriously considering their demands! But, they're exhausted and you can't use them in the next round.

The Tenants Rights Group lobbied the government for a rent freeze; this was a total failure. The council dismissed them as a bunch of anarchists.

Turn Two:
As climate change accelerates and makes larger areas of the Earth less habitable we see an increase in climate driven migration. The government responds by building migrant detention centres including one just outside the town. A small number of jobs for local people are created as a result. The town also sees some migrants not in detention sent to the area and housed in hard to let housing. Tensions in the town rise as a result.

The Community Farm set up an initiative with the new migrants in the town growing and selling organic produce. Unfortunately, the weather is terrible and the vegetables are tiny and malformed. Moreover, some of the more experienced Farm volunteers dislike the migrants, and racial tensions increase.

The BLM group run a social media campaign to raise awareness of conditions in the detention centre, with a focus on the terrible food. They encourage the centre to buy the Farm's produce. This is a huge success: the food in the detention centre is replaced by the Farm's small organic vegetables.

Turn Three: With the town becoming recognised as a focal point of the contentious issue of migration it also becomes a focus of far-right activism leading to a terrorist attack claimed by a white nationalist organisation. Two people are killed by a bomb set by the group.

BLM group lead a campaign to fix the mosque destroyed in the bomb, and to raise funds for the families of those who have died. This goes terribly: they recieve lots of vitriolic abuse and raise very little money.

The Labour Party branch reach out to the national leader who comes up from Westminster and invites local groups for a vigil outside the mosque. This goes well: lots of people turn up and the mood in the town gets better. However, the Labour leader accidentally sets the mayor's sleeve on fire with a candle and his popularity plummets.

Turn Four:
Geopolitics increasingly divides around two blocks, a China led green technology block and a US led fossil fuel block. The UK government aligns with the latter and announces the repeal of environmental protection acts to allow it to focus on big infrastructure projects.

XR lobby the local council to install insulation and make more bike lanes; unfortunately, they're politically clueless and diplomatically inept. The council decides to invest in a new motorway.

The Community Farm use their detention centre money to launch a new green energy initiative, including the creation of a new biomass energy generator. This is successful, generating new interest in green issues around the town. Unfortunately, the stress of the project means some older members die, and the Farm's numbers are depleted.

Turn 5:

An increasingly disrupted climate is producing increasingly extreme weather events around the world. A very wet and stormy winter leads to major flooding around your region including your town. The local river bursts its banks in late December. It is estimated that 10’000 people, fully half the town’s residents, have been made homeless. Transport links are cut, and aid is struggling to reach the town due to widespread flooding throughout Northern England.

The Women's Group launch an emergency housing initiative using school halls etc. to house those displaced by the floods. This is largely successful but only the schools and churches listen, so not everyone gets someone to sleep.

The Community Farm launches a soup kitchen to feed the town. They are exhausted and depleted, and this fails terribly. No one gets to eat.
