Torrential rain and winds of up to 120 kilometres per hour from a powerful hurricane witnessed landfall at Coffs Harbour this afternoon. Experts said floods have forced the Chinese authorities to carry out rescues on a big scale.

Train derailment in Brisbane reports multiple injuries and casualties.

This morning, commuter train derailed in inner Brisbane with multiple injured and several feared dead. After the explosions, police, firefighters and hospitals were put on alert, while investigators at the scene worked to determine the cause.

• At last report, the proprietor of the shop was in a serious but stable condition.

• The driver of the car received only minor injuries.

• The driver of the car was immediately apprehended and taken into custody.

• The driver of the car was later charged with offences related to dangerous driving and breaking the speed limit.

• The pursuing police were quickly on the scene.

• An ambulance was called.

• Within a few minutes the ambulance arrived.

Within a few minutes the ambulance arrived.

The shop proprietor was pulled from the rubble, seriously injured and taken to Westmead Hospital, Parammatta.

At last report, the proprietor of the shop was in a serious but stable condition.

Despite the health effects and government health messaging, students and staff around the University of New South Wales (UNSW) campus oppose a vaping ban, citing fears of illegal activity and insist regulation is the path forward. 

Recently, the Australian government has tightened its regulation on nicotine vapes. We polled locals on the Kensington campus of UNSW to see what the vox populi thought about a potential vape ban. 

Most students argued that a ban was not the right way to stop vaping, expressing concerns over the rise of illegal nicotine and the distribution of bad quality products.

A 22 year old electrical engineering student and frequent vaper, Vindu said that regulation would lead to a reduction of illegal activity and that he actively opposed a ban on vaping. 

“A ban would just make people do illegal stuff so (yeah) regulation is better,” he said.

Another STEM student, Michael, a 19 year old medical science student who does not vape, also agrees that vaping should be controlled rather than banned altogether. His reasons were that vapes act as destressors similar to alcohol and smoking and a ban on vapes would be equivalent to banning those. Similar to alcohol, he states that vapes are sold in pharmacies for medical purposes.

Cancer Council informs the public on the dangers of vaping, targeting the youth. 

“The Generation Vape Study found that 79% of young adults who vape say that it’s ‘easy’ to access vaping products” , said Cancer Council NSW. 

Students and Staff seem to agree, urging the government for stricter regulations to manage the growing addiction that is taking hold of the youth.

John Doe has denied wrongdoing on charges of burglary and theft after an alleged incident that took place at 123 Elm Street, Springfield on January 15th.

A police investigation found fingerprints matching John Does' were found at the scene of the crime. 

A neighbour, Jane Smith testified that she saw John Doe near the house on the night of the incident. 

Prosecutor Ms Mary Johnson said;

“The evidence clearly places John Doe at the scene of the crime. His fingerprints were found inside the house and a witness saw him in the vicinity”.

Despite the evidence, Mr Doe’s defence attorney Mr Robert Lee says that Mr Doe had an alibi the night of the incident.

“John Doe has an alibi for the night in question. He was with a friend, and we have witnesses to corroborate this.” he said. 

Mr Doe’s friend has not yet testified in court and could be a key figure in the resolution of this case.

Prosecutor Mary Johnson told the court that fingerprints discovered inside the property matched those of the accused. “The evidence clearly places John Doe at the scene of the crime,” she said, adding that a neighbour, Jane Smith, testified to seeing Mr Doe near the house on the night of the incident.

Mr Doe has pleaded not guilty to all charges. His lawyer, Robert Lee, argued that his client was elsewhere at the time. “John Doe has an alibi for the night in question,” he told the jury. “He was with a friend, and we have witnesses to corroborate this.”

While speculation about Mr Doe’s past and the reliability of witnesses has appeared in some outlets and online, such claims have not been presented in court and should not influence the proceedings. Mr Doe remains innocent until proven guilty.

It was revealed during the trial that investigators had found fingerprints matching Mr Doe's at the scene of the alleged crime.

Jane Smith, living next door to 123 Elm Street, stood on trial as a witness claiming that she saw Mr Doe in the vicinity of the house.

Prosecutor Mary Johnson insisted upon the defendant's assumed guilt, “The evidence clearly places John Doe at the scene of the crime. His fingerprints were found inside the house, and a witness saw him in the vicinity.”

However, the defendant denied the accusation, citing an alibi. He stated that was at a friend's house the night of the alleged crime.

Defence Lawyer Robert Lee challenges the prosecution, “Mr. Doe has an alibi for the night in question. He was with a friend, and we have witnesses to corroborate this.”

The defence's witnesses have yet to testify in court so we can only wonder what they will say in the next hearing.

This is alleged to have taken place on the night of January 15, 2024, at address 123 Elm Street. Prosecutors allege that Mr Doe gained entry into the address, taking valuables.

In the opening submissions of September 1, prosecutor Mary Johnson stated in court, “The evidence plainly locate the defendant, John Doe, in the vicinity of the crime. He left his fingerprints in the house, as well as a witness seeing him in the vicinity.”

Fingerprints belonging to the defendant were found in the property, the court heard. Evidence came in that Jane Smith, a neighbor of the defendant, had spotted defendant Mr Doe near the property on the night of the offense.

Mr. Doe has pleaded "not guilty." "John Doe has an alibi for the night in question," his attorney Robert Lee stated in front of the jury. "He was with a friend, and we have witnesses to corroborate this."

The trial is ongoing before Judge Sarah Williams. A decision is not expected until the end of the week.
