This quiz was taken on Cigna.com. Based off of the results of the second quiz that I took, I have a moderate stress level. Further details of the results include that I may be feeling under pressure. I may be feeling like others are expecting too much from me or that I am expecting too much from myself. I can agree with these statements because lately, I have been feeling overwhelmed and as if nothing I do is ever good enough. I often put a lot of stress on myself because I feel like I am not doing enough in my life and I should be doing more. When this happens, it almost always results in me having a complete burnout and a small mental breakdown.

What does a student's stress look like? How does a student personally cope?

Personally, my stress includes trying to find a balance between work, school, being a mom, and being a wife. I have recently been feeling extremely overwhelmed with this because I accepted a behavioral technician job, which means that I will be working two jobs. I will be working the new job Monday-Friday and then I will work the second job on Saturday and Sunday. While my new job hasn't started yet, I have found myself to be very stressed out about time management. I am trying to figure out how I will manage my time so that I am able to work both jobs and put in the same effort into my schooling as I have previously. I also need to find the time to be a mom and a wife. Another aspect of my stress has been my student loans. I have a significant amount of student loans and I know that I will spend the next several years of my life paying them off. A student might cope with stress by finding activities that they enjoy in order to take their mind off of things. Students might also make to do lists in order to have all obligations laid out.

What are some ways to cope with stress?

Something that has been really helping me to lessen my stress is to write everything down. By this, I mean I will write down all of my due dates for my class. I will also write down any work obligations or any doctor's appointments. Writing everything down helps keep me organized and in turn lessens my stress levels. I have also been really trying to make a habit of making to do lists every day. In my to do lists, I will write down any homework that I need to complete, any phone calls that need to be made, or any chores that need to be done. Having everything listed out in front of me makes it seem a little less extreme and makes me feel like I am capable of accomplishing all of my to dos.

Some risks of stress include lack of sleep/issues staying asleep, lack of appetite, issues with moods, and relationship issues (Benham, & Charak, 2019). Stress can also weaken a person's immune system if exposed for extended amount of time (Sarafino, & Smith, 2017). Short term effects of stress can include difficulty focusing, issues with school/work, troubled relationships, and issues with mood stabilization (Sarafino, & Smith, 2017). Long term effects of stress include weakened immune systems, increased susceptibility to illness and conditions, destroyed relationships, and loss of employment (Sarafino, & Smith, 2017).

There are many different resources available for managing stress. Relief may be found in the form of a religious group, whether that be going to the place of worship or gaining a few friends with the same religion. Other resources can include school clubs and sports, friends and family, and also coworkers. Therapy and medication are also resources available to manage stress and its effects on the body and mind.

How can personal experience and knowledge help a patient/client?

Personal experience can be beneficial because it could allow the individual to take the opportunity to self reflect and change certain behaviors or mindsets. For example, after these assigned readings for the week, I have reevaluated how I manage stress and what the outcomes are. Now that I am more aware of how much stress can affect my body and mind, I am looking for better ways to cope and manage my stress. Having the knowledge can allow an individual to understand why the changes are so important and why they need to be made. Personal experience can also help change how the individual reacts to stress in future circumstances.
