  • The North had many industries such as shipping, textiles, lumber, furs, and mining.
  • Unlike the large farms of the South, the North had mostly small farms for individual families.
  • They didn't export much, but they did trade textiles, iron, and ships for foriegn goods.
  • They used waterpower and coal for steam plants for faster manufacturing.
  • The North favored tariffs, or taxes, on other countries.

  • The north had very warm summers, but cold winter.
  • Rocky mountains, and the short growing season make bad for farming. 
  • They used many of the forest for timber for shipbuilding.
  • Early settlers sailed the rivers into its many bays.
  • Fast shallow rivers made were very hard for ships to navigate.
  • Fall line was a plateau that eastward flowing rivers flowed into. Because of the waterfalls ships had to drop cargo here.

    From 1830-1860, over 2 million Irish, German, and Northern Europeans immigrated to the U.S., most of them staying in the North. 

    Almost all of the major cities in the North are on the coast, or are accessible by water. The cities also served as centers of trade for the U.S.
