Emotions and Collective Identity In A Momentum-Driven Movement

According to Engler & Engler, shifting public perception occurs to evoke emotions in people (Engler and Engler 141).

News & Social Media:
What sources are used to create collective action towards racial justice? News outlets and social media posts began to flourish with video evidence of the murder of George Floyd, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown and other victims of police brutality. People across the globe become struck with emotion from these videos, causing them to express their empathy, sadness, and anger through protests. People's emotions compel them to take action.

Emotions:
What triggers more movement activity? With the dramatic imagery and narratives in Ferguson, people from other states were compelled to be present in Ferguson. Some examples as to what mobilized people to be in Ferguson include: the militarization utilized in response to the murder of Michael Brown, national media attention, or perhaps the fact of Michael Brown being left in the heat for 4 hours-showing how inhumane and cruel the criminal justice system is.

Protests:
How can people take action for a movement? Through protests, those in support of black lives in the BLM Movement can express their emotions, which is one of the many ways that social change can occur, political action to take place, and a revolution to take place.

Collective Identity:
What's the importance of collective identity? With collective identity, individuals are able to inspire and be inspired to continue the fight for racial justice. The BLM movement expresses the importance of mobilizing together ('"strength in numbers") in order to end racial inequality all throughout the nation. Collective identity is evident through the use of protests, social media, news coverages of innocent black lives being lost, which creates a step toward social change.

The Impact of the BLM Movement:
It is evident in the world that support for black lives has increased and the police brutality towards black individuals has declined significantly this year. Due to the outpouring of protests, social media posts, hashtags, news coverages, etc., real social change has emerged in America. Two examples include the defunding of the police, changes in America's political leader, or even black representation in political positions. Support from other BIPOC communities has also made an immense impact on the movement to move forward. The impact of the BLM Movement can inspire present and future generations to speak up for issues and bring about social change.
