Content framing question--lesson level questions. This helps students develop a lens through which to view the text.

Craft question--has to do with speaking and listening.

Sometimes a lesson will have BOTH. Sometimes a lesson will have just one. You will both open and close one lesson with your content framing question because it guides student learning.

What is an essential question? What is a focusing question? How do they relate?

The essential question spans the ENTIRE module and frames the overall work students are doing. Think big picture. By the end of the module students will be able to answer the question and give multiple examples of evidence they understand. Everything you do the entire module centers around and builds to the essential question.

The framing question spans A FEW lessons within the module. Framing questions support the essential question and help build student skills and knowledge along the way.

How do I keep families in the loop?

There are family tip sheets on Great Minds, accessible through your Clever account. It tells families about the books, videos, art, etc. that students will be viewing and the questions they seek to answer. It also gives questions families can ask together at home.

What's with all the journals? How do I get organized? What do students need?

You have multiple options. Bottom line is students need a space for 1) knowledge 2) response and 3) vocabulary.

Some people combine knowledge and response because these areas are where students are responding to prompts, brainstorming, and recording their thinking.

In vocabulary they are making connections between words and applying their understanding of new definitions.

You can do 3 separate sections in a binder. or separate sections 1) Knowledge and response from 2) vocabulary. OR combine all three in a plain, chronological notebook. Do what works best for you and your students.

Content Framing Question. This will likely change daily.
Craft Question. This will likely change daily.
Vocabulary. Leave enough space so you can track vocab as you learn it along with definition, synonym, etc.
Leave room for the notice/wonder charts you make.
