From my “drawing” of my science experiences, my science experiences started out very interactive. My school would have the local zoo come visit our school, where we would learn about different types of animals, reptiles, and any other living species. We would also take frequent nature walks and experience and observe how the leaves changed colors for different seasons, and learned why trees have leaves on them in certain seasons. The school would allow our parents to come on these walks with us, and it was very enjoyable for us and our parents. It gave the parents a way to interact with their children through science, and if gave the students a chance to experience something they can observe every day. In Junior high school, we were still able to learn hands on. I remember dissecting a kidney bean, and doing many experiments with plants, but once I got to high school, the engaging interaction stopped. We were given a textbook and we had to read a chapter a week and answer questions. We didn’t do any labs, nothing hands on, we didn’t even discuss things in class. It was just basically an independent reading class on science material. To me good science curriculum is something that engages your students, something that your students can observe or practice by themselves.
