The Danger of lycanthropes or werewolves, is that if there is even a remote possibility of the phenomenon existing one must investigate, as a beast of this nature is not out of the physical realm of possibilities and could potentially cause damage on a massive scale if left unchecked. Enjoy this Hollywood depiction of An American Werewolf in London in which a werewolf triggers panic among the streets.

The curse of transformation to a beast in some cultures is metaphorical as in Native American lore, or as seen here in the following video, a native Brazilian legend of wolf men known as Lobisomem, stylized by creator Saulo Jamariqueli, demonstrates the cultural need for a release of energy, channeled through mythology in this case

The first time we know of a man being transformed into a wolf is the Greek mythological figure of Lycaon, the details vary, but all agree that Lycaon himself was turned into a wolf as punishment for feeding Zeus human remains. This image shows a stylized portrait of the event, It holds relevance to pseudoscience in that, the Greek system of gods was an early attempt to understand the world around them, and this very first recounting of a wolf man hybrid shows the deep rooted place that lycanthropy holds on our culture.

Thiess of Kaltenbrun - 1692 Common Era

As civilization began to enter a more modern scientific era, Newton just having published The Laws of Motion, 5 years earlier, some parts of mankind were still rooted in the pseudoscience realm for describing the events that were out of their control. In the story of Thiess of Kaltenbrun, he claims to become a werewolf and go to hell to do battle with Satan in an attempt to recover lost grain and livestock thrice yearly. We see here in the image Thiess digging his way to hell in an artists woodcarving, while the villagers in the background seem to be distraught over lost crops. I feel that this image shows how powerful pseudosciences were in historical times, woodcarving is time intensive, and the carver has purposely portrayed the werewolf, or Thiess, in a positive manner.
