Who are the other characters in these poems? What do they help us understand about the situations the mother and daughter are facing?

The other characters in this poem are the little cousins and the husbands. The husbands help us understand that they are no good for the women because the husband left the women with no wealth. The cousins are just part of the family who also have no wealth but the mother and daughter know that they have pride and will let nothing happen to them.

What is the significance of the different colored bandannas? What does this detail help us understand about the daughter’s situation? About the larger context for the poems?

The significance of the different colored bandannas helps the little girl and guides her to the right path of wealth. The yellow bananas can indicate the good path and the red or green bandannas can indicate the bad path to where she should not take. This helps us understand that the daughter is looking for the yellow bandannas for safety and her situation is hard because she needs to lookout for the bad people. This also shows that in both poems she knows her pride.

How does each poem start? Why is this important?

The first poem starts off by introducing how she is stronger and faster than her little cousins and how she is getting ready to leave the village with her little cousins. The second poem starts off by introducing how the mother knows why her daughter runs and why she believes she should leave the village. This is important because it shows us the two sides of the girl and the mother. It shows us how the daughter interprets herself leaving and also how the mother acts upon her daughter leaving.

Each poem contains a brief narrative or story. The daughter’s poem is a hypothetical scenario. The mother’s poem is an experience she had that day. What is the significance of these narratives? What do they help us understand?

The significance of the first narrative is that the daughter talks about how she wants to be somewhere with wealth, not somewhere she doesn't have wealth. She believes if she leaves she will have better wealth. The second narrative talks about how the mother wants what is best for her daughter. The mother can barely provide for herself. She wants nothing but wealth for her daughter. These narratives help us understand that no matter what, our mother will always have our back and wish the best for us even if it involves risking their life.

Why do you think the mother’s perspective comes after the daughter’s perspective?

We believe the mothers perspective is after the daughters perspective because the Writer wants to show what children believe they know is right, when they are wrong. The Writer puts the mothers perspective after to show that the mother is only wishing for her daughter to be safe and the daughter thinks the mother wants her gone with no explanation.

What does Garcia seem to be saying through her poems?

Garcia is saying how she does not want her daughter to experience the death of her mother from starvation. She is also saying how she believes it is best for her daughter to leave instead of staying where her daughter will have no wealth and where her daughter will watch her mother starve.

How does Garcia present this message or messages - consider the way the poems are organized, stanzas, lines, diction and imagery, POV, narrative?

She presents this message by organizing the poem in different stanzas that talk about different things. Each stanza has a purpose. Each stanza also added imagery such as "Coyotes," and "Yellow." This imagery in the poem provides a stronger meaning. From the point of view of the daughter, the poem stands out more because it talks about what the girl is going through and how she handles her situation. In the poem "On Staying Behind" it is the point of view of the mother and from her point of view she uses imagery including to add a stronger affect to the poem. " Strength in their arms--- blood that pumps through your heart and lungs." this shows that mother believes her child and her cousins are strong enough to leave by themselves.
