Living in Queens, my grandmother had always wanted to visit the Statue of Liberty. Up until this day, my great-grandmother had always told Diane she was not old enough. Back in the 50's, the Statue of Liberty had no elevator, only 162 steps to the top. And my grandmother used every single one to get to the tippy top; "What a magical day," she recalls.

In the end of the 1950's, my grandmother was beginning to age into a lovely young woman. During this time, my great-grandmother had told my grandmother that she needed to help out more around the house, particularly with contributing to the bills. My grandmother got a job working as a housecleaner for about 3-4 years before her and her family picked up and moved to Ohio.

And, in this area of Ohio, farming and land are about the only thing around for miles. This was the beginning of a very great life for my grandmother.

One brother is older than her, while the other 2 are younger. Starting as a freshman in high school, my grandma's brother Bud was an incoming Junior at the time. She said, "[she] was scared to enter a new school not knowing anybody, but having Bud by [her] side was more than comfort enough."

With my grandmother having 3 brothers, they would bring their friends over to their house to hang out and have fun sometimes. One of her brothers' friends went by the name of Rauleigh Wells. Rauleigh had met Diane's brothers at work in the coal mines and had been inseparable ever since. My grandmother and Rauleigh never really took interest in each other for a couple more years. What is so unique about their relationship is that Diane's mother treated Rauleigh like a 4th son; she always fed him, she always clothed him, and she always made sure he had somewhere to sleep. Rauleigh and Diane had grew up alongside each other and had no idea of their wonderful future together.
