Character Trait: Dependent
Quote: “You couldn't be on my side that long for nothing, could you. … A man needs for a woman to back him up…” (Page 32)
Explanation: Walter is dependent on people. Walter needed Ruth more than ever. In the near beginning Walter was found always getting drunk and coming home a mess to his wife and child. Ruth needed to be there for her husband to get him through whatever rough patch he was going through. They got married for a reason, to be there for each other even when in doubt, and I don't think Ruth has ever done that.

Character Trait: Nurturing
Quote: “I have been married eleven years and I got a boy who sleeps in the living room -- and all I got to give him is stories about how rich white people live…” (Page. 34)
Explanation: Even though Walter isn't overly compassionate about his life and where he is, he still shows his love towards his son. He wants to give his son and better life than he's had. He doesn't want to tell his son all about how he couldn't come up with the money for a job or house and how he'll get food on the table. He wants his son to go somewhere in life and succeed. Walter can seem like he doesn't care but really he wants whats good for his son.

My opinion on Walter is that he's a weak husband, who isn't really sure what to do with themselves and seem to give up when things get bad. I feel sympathy for him since he knows himself he can do better and be better but at the same time he can't. He WANTS to help his family, but they don't do anything to help him. Deep down, I feel Walter is a good person, but has a hard time showing it. He loves his family and would want to be better for them.

I chose this piece to represent Walter. It represents him because whoever is in this, must be at the bar, or at home drunk maybe mourning over something bad and deep in there thoughts. Just like the painting, Walter drinks and just wants a better life. Even though it can be hard to see, you can clearly see a drink in the persons hand, and a sad expression on his/her face. In Raisin In the Sun, Walter thinks his life is almost over and wont ever get better so he drinks his pain away.

" You have to be always drunk. That’s all there is to it—it’s the only way. So as not to feel the horrible burden of time that breaks your back and bends you to the earth, you have to be continually drunk. "

The poem, Be Drunk, relates a lot to Walter. When it says, "So as not to feel the horrible burden of that time that breaks your back and bends you to earth, you have to always be drunk" is exactly what Walter is doing. He's getting drunk to forget his problems and life. Almost like a burden, he wants them to go away. Walter isn't constantly drunk, but when he does get drunk, he wants to get rid of his thoughts and pain.

I related Walter to "Say You Wont Let Go", by James Arthur. In his song, he talks about getting drunk at the bar then coming back to his girl since he made a "mistake". I related this to when Walter's mom by accidentally told Walter that Ruth, his wife, was pregnant. Walter went out and immediately went to the bar to drink his thoughts away. Walter did run out because it shocked him, but he tried acting like he didn't care, like when James says he was "playing cool, when he was scared of letting go". Also, Walter NEEDS Ruth, but doesn't show it. Like James saying "I know I needed you, But i never showed"

Theme: Sacrificing everything that's important will only bring good to you.
Quote: (Mama) "He finally come into his manhood today, didn't he? King of like a rainbow after the rain". (Page: 151)

This quote supports the theme because Walter, like before, drank plenty of times during the day and night. He'd come home late and drunk from the bar. He wanted the money to invest in the Liquor Store. Obviously knowing he couldn't get it, he drank more. After the realtor tried talking them out of moving into the "white" neighborhood, Walter decided it was time to do the right thing and man up for himself since there is all woman in the house. He told the realtor off and made sure to get his point across that they weren't changing his mind. He sacrificed his own well being for the sake of the family and his wife.
