My Thoughts

I was never really a huge fan of remix music when I was younger mainly because I thought of it as dance music, and I can't dance at all. I believed that the best use for those kinds of songs was in a concert or a rave but not necessarily in my living room. I guess I never really gave it much of a chance because I liked listening to the music as it was originally created and how I knew it. I think that I appreciate it more now even though I don't listen to it on a daily basis because I see more purpose to it now. It is amazing how someone can mix up a song to give people a different feeling without completely changing the song. This can be seen though Reba A. Wissners article where she says, "remixes have allowed Radiohead fans to experience the music from a new perspective" and even though this is specified towards one fanbase, it can be used to talk about anyone who listens to remix music. I feel like if we think about it extremely literally, it is very hard to find anything that is truly original. Parts of a song can be changed up and repeated or lyrics can be rearranged to almost mean the same thing. As long as people are credited in some sense I do not see the problem with changing up a song.

Put Your Head On My Shoulder Remix

This song was originally sang by Paul Anka in 1963 and was re-released on the album "Blue Moon" in 2012. Youtuber, Anthony Florey or "Floreyyyy" uploaded his remix in 2017. In his remix, all of the lyrics were kept the same and he mainly added some beats and messed around with some other aspects of the song. The version before obviously had an older sense to it since it was from the 60's but Florey's version made it feel much more modern while still keeping its older feeling intact. I like to listen to this version as it feels much more relaxed than the original though the original is great. When remixing an old song like this it can be controversial in the sense that people usually feel the need to say that the original will "always be the best" and that it "could never be topped" which is exactly what Brett Gaylor is expressing in his documentary within "A Remixer's Manifesto". Point 4 says that "to build free societies, you must limit the control of the past" meaning that we should allow new versions to be able to be just as appreciated as the original. That doesn't mean that the original should be forgotten though.

I Took A Pill In Ibiza

For this song, I head the remix before I even knew that it wasn't the original. The remix was by Seeb and was originally by Mike Posner. It was playing on the radio that way and for the longest time I thought that was the original. When I actually heard the original the lyrics felt much more real and like they had much more meaning. In the remix it was kind of a fun song. One you could dance to and something you'd hear at a party or something. When the original was actually very calm, simple, and slowed down it made you really take in the lyrics and feel what Posner was feeling when he wrote it. In this case, I feel like the original had a bigger impact on how it made people feel as opposed to the remix that was so commonly known.

Sad Song

This remix is similar to what I mentioned for "I Took A Pill In Ibiza" since the original is quite sad and makes you think more about the lyrics than the music. The song was remixed by RJ and featured Olivia Holt instead of Elena Coats who was on the original. This remix came out about 4 years after the original. Since I heard the original first, I think that the remix definitely makes the song a bit more hopeful than the original. It's something you can dance and sing to in a happier way than you probably could with the originally which I'm assuming was the point here. To create something more with what you already have which is what all these artists have done in their remixes.
