My class is wizard of oz themed. I created names for each center relating to the movie ex: Emerald City Art. Along with the
center names, each child is put into a character group ex: Dorothy group, Tinman group etc. Each child has their picture along with the group name. When it is time to change centers, all the pictures on the group paper can move as well.

Not only do they love playing in this center but we utilize it for when the children are upset they go to this center to calm them down by touching and finding different items.

This file folder game is called "Grin and Bear it" you just yske the little cut out bears (in the ziplock bag) and matching them up to the color of the bears stomach. Its a great way for the kids to learn their colors.

During circle time I have popsicle sticks with students names on them. I draw a stick and the students try to recognize whose name it is. That student comes up and says the letters in his/her name. Then we sing a song to the tune of The Muffin Man: Emma came to school today, to school today, to school today. Emma came to school today...hi Emma hi!

For a fun learning center I chose to use salt and food coloring! Children can use this to have fun and learn spelling words. To use, a child would drop food coloring onto a bed of salt and use their fingers to draw a word such as “Bike”.

For one of my learning centers I would have a tub filled with sand and I would have plastic letters in them A-Z. I would give the children a sheet of paper with the letters on them. The children will have to find the letters in the tub and match them to the ones on the sheet of paper. They will then color the letter on the sheet of paper after they found it in the tub. This will be a fun activity for them to learn and recognize the alphabet.

I love construction so my favorite learning center has
always been Block play. Teachers can extend block play by adding props for road play including cars and trucks of different sizes, road signs, plants, road carpets, masking tape to make lines, figurines and people, boxes for garages. My daycare kids loved play-doh. And I was always looking for ways to incorporate learning into play-doh time. We've made the whole alphabet with it one time. I like the idea of using play-doh to hold the letters to spell the word.

This is a game I created for my cooking center. It’s called alphabet cookies. The students match the magnets to the letters. They can serve them as cookies by taking them off the sheet with a spatula. I love the center that I created. I made a “stove and oven” out of a plastic storage box. It has moving nobs for the burners and play food, utensils, and other kitchen tools stored inside. I also had a play-doh game where you can roll balls of doh to match the number of peas. I would include more cooking games. For example, I would maybe add “recipes” that the students could create. And maybe a blank sheet with Velcro food to create their own recipes.

An idea that I really like for learning centers is to have children write letters in rice. You take any color of dyed rice and spread a thin layer in a disposable pie dish, then students write in the rice. The can write letters, words, or numbers in the rice. I do this with my nephew who is in kindergarten and he loves it.

I love my sensory table! Its always a hit with the kids and I like coming up with new ideas for this learning center. It can get a bit messy, but its always fun to watch them learn and explore with what I've put into it. I thought this was a great idea with letter molds and kinetic sand to practice letter recognition! Or for more advanced kiddos, they can start putting sounds together to make words!

For my sensory table, I love the idea of water and sand. Children love to learn and explore, so this is perfect for them! It can get messy with sand and water so always make sure to put down a tarp or something to protect the floors. You can add cool toys to the sand/water or you can even add letters to help spell words. Having sand/water as a learning center can be very versatile because it can act as many different centers.

One center I find important is a science/sensory learning center. I have always been a hands on learner and I strongly believe that doing things hands on with your kids will be a good experience for the teacher and their students. This center gives the students a time to be hands on and have fun while also learning something new.

With this sensory table activity, the children are able to make pumpkin pie or cupcakes or whatever they imagine they are making. I had tried doing an Apple Pie activity and the children loved the activity because the recipe cards and the counting how many scoops goes into the pie they are making. The children can do the same thing with the pumpkin pie activity as well.

One of the Centers I really like in our room is Dramatic Play Center. All of the children love acting like their parents or even dressing up. We put little cook books in this center and our children act like they are cooking and taking care of the babies. We also have a table, high chair, and a baby bed. The children love to act like they are feeding the babies, changing them and putting them to bed. They will pat their babies backs just like we do when we put them down for nap. I feel like this center is important because it's like every day life. Its also funny seeing how much these children actually know and pay attention to how parents do certain things at home. In this center they learn how to role play and important social skills.

I like the writing center in the older preschool rooms. I see children put a piece of paper on a clip board and they grab something to write with. They ask their friends how to spell their name or they go around asking the teachers how to spell different objects in the room. The writing center also give the children a chance to be creative in making their own types of crafts such as a computer, tiaras, kites, wrist bands, tickets to come to each other houses, drawings that they make up; these are just a few things that I have seen my children make. It is important for children to come up with their own ideas and trying to make them come alive.

Dramatic play in my opinion is so important. I think that having different scenarios set up and changing the clothing/toys in that center is also a good idea. I believe that it give children a chance to explore real life responsibilities and expand their creativity. Dramatic play can have any subject incorporated into it I believe and that ca also help students learn in different ways. I believe hands on learning is very important and that it helps children's attention spans last a little longer than usual. Children get a chance to express who they really are.

I love the idea of having a sand and water table for the children to play in. Letting the children bury letters and toys in the sand is so much for them. They get to see themselves bury it and then they use the different sand toys provided to dig and try to find what they buried under the sand. Water play is the same way. Watching the kids play with the different water toys and watching them discover how they work is just so fun and then you can join in their play and talk to them about what they are doing and what they all see in the sand.

I would put this in my table top section and that way the children can pull it out and bring it to the table and trace their letters and when they fish it out of the bucket. That way they are not in a center on the floor loosing pieces and they can concentrate and not make to big of a mess

I love this counting pipe cleaner activity for a math center. This activity assists children in three major areas counting, colors, and fine motor. Not only could this activity be used for preschool, but it could also be used for a two year old room if you work in a day care. You could also use this idea, but use letters instead of numbers. This could be a fun way to teach children how to spell their name.

I enjoy helping kiddos learn the alphabet it is one of the first things they start to learn. There is so many different ways to help them with this. I found this ideal on pinterest to have a center for alphabet. You can use the ice cubes that are washable and write the letters on it and have them use tongs to either playing matching game or pick them up to put in a bowl or cup.

One area that I want to make sure I have in my room, is the quiet area. An area where the children have a chance to sit and relax, even if it is for a couple of seconds. This area will allow the children to "reset". Some kids are not used to A LOT of people and this area will help them in adjusting to your classroom.

A block earning center is vital in early care and education environments, because block play helps children develop motor skills. Dramatic play is essential for showing children that anyone can do anything they set their mind to. A man can be the cook of the family, or the woman can be a construction worker. Anyone can raise children or work outside the home. Many social skills are learned while in the dramatic play center. One day you can be a princess, and the next you can be a firefighter. Children learn to take turns and to share with each other.

This block center is a great way to show how to organize the blocks by bin. They are separated out by colors and offer a great visual aid on the label. Blocks provide a great way for kids to use their imagination for building and creating things!

I like to use the writing center in our classroom. The children can write a letter to mom if they miss her or they have may ways to learn letters. Magnetic letter boards, different writing mediums, different types of paper and the really like when they can have a mailbox out to seal and send their letters. One time the mailbox comes out is when we are learning about community helpers, they can send a letter for the mailman to pick up. Make sure to have envelopes available the children can then work on folding and inserting the paper into the envelope.

My favorite learning center at the children's museum was the grocery store section. I would add something similar to my classroom.

My favorite learning center is one of the more popular favorites, the dramatic play center. This can include kitchen sets with food and grocery items, vanities with beauty and hair items, dress-up clothes, costumes, etc. This is a center where meaningful tasks and challenges can be provided so that children can practice different skills in a more authentic way. They will begin to connect play with real-world concepts. In my 2-year-old classroom, I have our dramatic play center set up with a kitchen set, food and grocery items, a vanity, hair and beauty items, animal masks, and dress-up clothes such as a princess dress, firefighter jacket, doctor’s coat, etc. I like what I have now, but being a second-year teacher, I hope to grow this learning center to something more. Adding a kitchen table and chairs, a supermarket set, different items that I could interchange and make seasonal would be great.

The best centers for kids in my opinion are sensory and block. In sensory they really get to start developing their senses and they get to play with many different options using a sand and water table you can really fill this with things to fit all themes that can really get the kids minds rolling. Block area is a key spot so kids can learn control they learn how to control the blocks and stack them to make certain things like a house. They also learn to share in black center with their friends.

The Montessori curriculum is very different than a standard everyday curriculum so the way our centers/stations are designed and place in the room are very particular and truly important to all of the students. Everything must be placed with the same developmental or learning skill, craft, discovery, math, science, or creative activity throughout the class setting.
The five areas of a Montessori classroom are:

Practical Life
Sensorial
Math
Language
Cultural

All these Montessori structures must be in the same areas based on the title of the activities curriculum!
But to be more specific in the Montessori philosophy we allow 2 options usually always to allow the students to feel as still they are making their own decision even throw we gave them the options, they get to choose so the feel more in control, and independent.

Our two forms of center/ station work options are:

Table work
Mat work which is done on a mat that is laid on the floor flat.

My favorite learning center is Dramatic play. Last week in dramatic play we went camping! I pitched a small tent, provided pretend wood pieces for the children to build a fire, s’mores, hot dogs, flashlights, and even set up a fishing area that included fishing poles, worms, and vests. With construction paper, I made a “pond” and placed the fish there so that the children could go fishing. They loved that the fish and pole were magnetic and that they could actually catch a fish! I even heard a few kiddos say they were going on a bear hunt.

Me and my kids love the house keeping area and that is where my toddlers and I spend the first part of the morning. I tell them I'm hungry for breakfast, can you make me something to eat? in our house keeping we have kitchen, babydolls and dress up. It's fun center for us to play at throughout the day.

I would love to design a calm down/ sensory corner. I would use calming colors with pillows and a large rug with baskets that hold some sensory or fidget items as well as a few calming picture rings and books that promote a sense of calm and comfort. An interactive board would be on one part of a wall and shelving on the other. I would also include a hide away cube of some sort with a few soft animals.

We have multiple different centers/stations that our students can choose from. For ISBE the children have to get a hour of undisturbed free play. We have the dramatic play center/ house keeping, table toys, special table toys, large carpet toys, block center, science center, art center, technology center, and the library (quiet center) for the students who want to read books. The students love visiting all the different areas. We also have a snack center for ISBE that is replenished daily.

An idea I have for a learning center would be to get a sensory table, and every week change it out to the theme that you're teaching the kids for the week. For example if you're having a snow theme you can get fake snow and add "treasures" for the kids to dig through and find, or an outdoors unit you could have the students collect sticks and leaves, then add fake bugs in it!

Each station/center should include all materials in relation to the overall theme. As far as games are concerned, Connect 4, Sorry, Candyland, Uno, Don't Wake Daddy, and Checkers ought to be featured prominently. I believe that aside from the entertaining aspects of these games, children will acquire skills in thses areas:
1. problem solving
2. adding and subtracting
3. strategizing
4. sorting
5. and cooperation.

A learning center I think would be fun and educational is a Restaurant. The children would be able to fill the roles of cook, waiter/waitress, cashier, and customer. The items on my wish list would be chairs and a table with tablecloth, placemats, napkins, salt, pepper, ketchup, and mustard. A colorful menu with words and pictures plus all the food components on the menu. All the needed serving utensils. As well as aprons, notepads, pencils, cash register, and serving trays.

I love dramatic play centers! At home I have an ice cream shop for my daughter and a mock nursery for her baby dolls. I'd implement things like that into a class setting. -Haley Lovins
