Art and Design - Literacy, Numeracy, Health and Well-being, Developing the Young Work Force

Mr Jack, Miss Alexander and Miss Robertson are encouraging students to reflect on their work in terms of media handling skills, problem solving skills and the overall effectiveness of the task (Expressive, Design, Critical) at hand through using formative assessment techniques. This can be completed in an individual basis or through working with a partner or class discussion. One to one interaction with the student and teacher occurs on a daily basis and is a natural element in an Art and Design lesson. Sometimes, students will be asked to formally write down their thoughts, feelings and to communicate how successful their work may be or they may be asked to orally express this too. There are varying ways of recording this process and it is dependent on the task at hand. It is important to also highlight that the process of completing the actual work may be more important than the actual outcome. All of these skills are essential in progressing through the stages at the Broad General Education and into the Senior Phase. A lot of the skills developed at the earlier stages are carried into the Senior Phase. For example, considering the uses of the Visual Elements (Techniques used by every artist or designer such as line, shape, colour, tone, pattern, texture, form) are explored in a practical way and also through critical analysis, which is then built into National and Higher courses in terms of the Art and Design Studies Question Paper. Therefore all of the skills are transferable. In terms of the real world, artists and designers will always be asked to refine, reflect and further develop their ideas/work. We are always encouraging our students to try and do this and this is a life skill which is also transferable to other areas of the curriculum and indeed to the working world. Artists and designers will be asked to share their work in varying ways (this could be in a personal sense - through gallery openings or in a professional way - designers and clients considering the stages of the design process, from a design brief through to a final outcome).
