They end up making a soup of their crew members dead body, and the tiny floating hand remind Quan of his brother's birth. This is important because we see Quan recalling a fond memory in the midst of a trauma ridden event. Quan, probably desensitized to death in many ways at this point says this lost solider was "prepared to accept this strange gift."
