In terms of first person, I think Angie Cruz delivers an almost dream-like narration from Olivia.  As if she were to be communicating in her sleep with the reader.  It shows that she's aware of her surroundings but she's not entirely conscious.  As if she were in between worlds. 

It also works as an analyzation of the people around her and how Olivia really feels about them.

You can tell she spends a lot of her time outside and around other kids of her age range. This probably is a big influence on her. She doesn't talk in a lot of Spanish, more so English.
