Provide a short answer for the 2 questions posted on the Cage set work. Your answer should contain 2/3 relevant points and should only be a couple of sentences long. You must not use an example used by someone else. You must ensure that your answer is relevant/referenced and uses technical vocabulary accurately. I've given you an example answer to question 2 as a guide

Cage uses a fast duple metre 2/2 throughout and although his use of rhythmic values is relatively simple e.g. crotchets and quavers, the metre is constantly disrupted through the use of cross rhythms (groupings of three quavers). This in comparison to Stravinsky's Rite of Spring who achieves a similar result but using a wide variety of unusual tuplet groupings (e.g. 5,6,7's) simultaneously.

1. The metre throughout is simple duple time with minim beat - 2/2 - Stravinsky - 'Rite of Spring'.
2. The phrase 'Rhythmic Ostinato' refers to both repeated motifs, and to longer repeated phrases such as the seven crotchet pattern at the beginning of Piano 2, LH. These ostinati repeat at the same 'pitches' - and to that extent are also melodic - Messiaen - 'End of Time' - the tala rhythmic cycles.

In the opening if the piece accents are used to emphasise the first beat, whereas later on they are used to emphasise off beats to disturb the rhythm. In addition to this rests are used at the end of sections e.g. just before figure 5. This disturbing use of accents can be seen in Stravinskys 'Rite of Spring', where he uses off beat accents on chords in the horn section at the start of the augures

Consists of nine 30-bar parts, divided into the nine phrases. Phrases are: 2 5 2, 2 6 2, 2 7 2.
The middle sections of the phrases progressively increases each bar at a time. This can be compared to the Stravinsky because the music is organised in 'blocks' of sound; every 3 bars (at the beginning), there is an example of micro-macrocosmic design, the idea that structures repeat or get smaller each time, a term that describes the structure of the Cage.

Uses different materials (e.g. metal bolts and screws, weather strip, rubber, plastic, coins), to prepare the pianos. Results in a range of timbres, from dead to gong -like. Cage uses the different timbres and pitches to structure the piece, separate the sections. Can be compared to Saaariaho, the work blends traditional cello timbres with extended techniques and various degrees of electronic distortion. (Extended techniques - excessive uses of gliss, trills, sul ponte and sul tasto).

1. Harmony - Occasional triad shapes do not sound like triads (e.g. the 'D minor' chords in Piano 1, LH at the beginning of No.41)
2. Pedal points between Nos. 46 and 62 with the repeated A in Piano 1 LH - but this has no harmonic or tonal significance.
3. Melody - Frequently, patterns of notes recur, but these are perceived much more in rhythmic terms e.g. the two bar pattern in Piano 1, RH, that is heard altogther 16 times in parts 8 and 9 (from Nos. 64 and 73) - Messiaen - 'End of Time' - again the repeated notes/ phrases in the rhythmic cycles.
