1. What is Dong Ho painting? What is its value?

Dong Ho painting is a traditional folk art in Vietnam, with its origins traced back to Dong Ho Village in Bac Ninh Province. In the past, Dong Ho paintings were commonly sold during the Lunar New Year, and people often purchased them to adorn their homes for the holiday. Over time, these paintings have evolved into cherished expressions of traditional artistic beauty, collected and displayed within homes on various occasions.

Dong Ho folk painting carries both decorative and artistic values while maintaining a rustic simplicity that is easy to understand. They are intimately connected with the life of the people in the Northern Delta region of Vietnam. Dong Ho paintings encompass a wide array of patterns, genres, and subjects, reflecting nearly everything about Vietnamese people.

Dong Ho painting meaning is about the daily life of Vietnamese people (Source: Collected)

Dong Ho paintings often depict pictures of Vietnam’s daily activities such as buffalo herding, coconut picking, wrestling, and family life. Each painting carries a wish for harmony, love, prosperity, comfort, happiness, and the determination to thrive in life. Furthermore, Dong Ho art also preserves the beauty of Vietnamese cultural heritage through depictions of proverbs, anecdotes, legends, and stories.

>>> Discover: Vietnamese souvenirs: 18 unique local products to bring home from Vietnam

2.Why is Dong Ho painting so special?

There are several reasons that make the art of creating Dong Ho folk paintings unique and recognized as Vietnam's intangible cultural

3.Painting paper

The first distinctive feature about Dong Ho paintings is the paper used for printing. This paper is made from "dó" tree bark, possessing characteristics of being soft, thin, porous, and able to absorb colors without smudging. Due to its moisture-resistant quality, "dó" paper prevents artworks from becoming damp and moldy, ensuring their relatively long lifespan

4.Painting colors

The colors used in Dong Ho paintings are entirely natural, sourced from plants without any artificial mixtures. There are only four basic colors: black from charred bamboo leaves, green from indigo leaves, yellow from umbrella tree flowers, and red from red stone or wood.

Depending on preferences and the desired intensity of the painting, artisans will either deepen or lighten certain details. Because these colors are entirely derived from nature, the painting's simple pigments are distinctively long-lasting and carry the fragrance of their natural constituents, setting them apart from other types of paintings.

Dong Ho painting is a line of Vietnamese folk paintings originating from Dong Ho village (Song Ho ward, Thuan Thanh town, Bac Ninh province),but aboriginal art originates from Australia.Up to now, Dong Ho paintings have existed for about 300 years, but original art has existed for 20,000 years.People crush the scallop shells, mix them with paste (the paste is cooked from plain rice flour, or sticky rice, cooked with tapioca starch - usually diluted from rice flour). Glue or cassava flour use a pine needle broom to sweep the paper. Black color comes from oval wood charcoal, glutinous rice straw or bamboo leaf charcoal, which is soaked thoroughly in jars for several months before being used; Green comes from copper rust or indigo leaves, yellow comes from gardenia flowers; The red color is taken from wine wood and ocher gravel on Thien Thai mountain; White color comes from scallops.Aboriginal art is made from things such as potting soil, clay,...The details in Dong Ho's paintings are inspired by everyday life or wishes for the future. Original art is the same, but it also talks about future plans.

Dong Ho painting is a type of folk painting in Viet Nam and it originated more than 100 years ago .The colors in Dong Ho paintings have 5 main colors that are completely natural: red from young bricks, yellow from rose flowers, black from bamboo leaf charcoal, green from cajuput leaves, white from scallop shells. Usually to print a painting requires 2 - 5 engraving boards, each board corresponding to 1 color. Dark colors are printed first, followed by light colors, and finally black to complete the picture .Each Dong Ho painting has 2-5 different wood carvings depending on the color of each sample. To get a complete piece of Do paper, people must choose each type of Do paper taken from the forest, then go through many stages of drying, soaking, pounding, mixing the powder into the seo tank, separating the paper, and squeezing out the water. , dried, and packed into finished products . After the painting has been printed, it will be left to dry. As for aboriginal art, it originated from Australian aborigines 20,000 years ago.Dot Art is a form of painting with dots, an art style that uses dots of different colors to represent images.Aboriginal people are known to have a strong relationship with natural landscapes, including deserts, coasts, valleys and grasslands.

Dong Ho Painting is a kind of Vietnamese folk painting originating in Dong Ho Village in Song Ho Commune, Thuan Thanh District, Bac Ninh Province. Dong Ho paintings have about 300 years of history in the north of Vietnam.

Dong Ho pictures are printed on a special kind of Dzo paper. The printing paper is made of bark of a tree called “Dzo”. Artists use pine leave brushes to coat Dzo paper with sea bivalve mollusk powder to create a sparkling colorful background. Colors of the painting are refined from various kinds of tree leaves, which people can easily find in Vietnam. Traditional artists use all-natural colors for their pictures: burnt bamboo leaves for black, cajuput leaves for green, copper rust for blue, pine resin for amber, and crushed egg shells mixed with paste for white. The painting is covered by a layer of sticky rice paste to protect the painting and their colors. They are so long lasting, so that it is very difficult to make them dimmer even time or daylight.

Dong Ho Painting has produced hundreds of famous works such as the romantic and humorous “Catching coconuts”, “Teacher” which captures old educational practice and “Jealousy scene” satirizing the polygamous system. But the most famous ones are the pictures of pigs with Ying and Yang circles on the bodies. People in the countryside used to buy Dong Ho pictures for decoration during Tet.

In the past, December was the month households started to produce pictures for Tet. Dong Ho pictures were sold at most rural markets. Those who went shopping for Tet never failed to bring home several Dong Ho pictures, believing they would bring good luck.

Located in Bac Ninh province, around one hour drive from Hanoi city, visitors coming to this small village will have the chance to learn more about the ancient art form of woodblock printing and the unique art of making Dong Ho paintings that once had been a must-have item for decoration during Tet holidays in most households of Vietnam.
