Alice’s changes can be explained by social cognitive theory, which shows how people learn from others and adapt to their surroundings. When Alice saw her classmates being loud and outgoing, she realized that being quiet might make her feel left out, just like before. Wanting to fit in, she decided to act more outgoing, even though it felt uncomfortable. As her classmates responded positively and made friends with her, she kept up this behavior, showing how her environment, thoughts, and actions influenced each other.

Yes, Mdm Bong was being altruistic because she raised money to help Mrs Chang with her treatment out of care and concern for her friend. Altruism refers to prosocial behavior that is done with no expectation of reward and may involve the risk of harm to oneself. While Mdm Bong felt happy about helping, her main intention was to support Mrs Chang and ease her financial burden, showing selflessness in her actions.

In my view, to overcome prejudices, we need to focus on understanding and empathy. This can be done by promoting an education/awareness campaign that highlights different perspectives, encouraging meaningful interactions between diverse groups, and challenging stereotypes when we see them. I believe it’s also important to reflect on our own biases and work to change them. By creating environments that value respect and inclusion, we can take small but powerful steps toward reducing societal prejudice.

Her initiative to organize a “charity package” suggests she genuinely wanted to ease Mrs Chang’s financial burden.Mdm Bong’s actions were not a duty but a voluntary effort. She sought out contributions from mutual friends, coordinated the fundraising, and presented the money as a birthday surprise, showing significant personal effort.Mdm Bong may have empathized with Mrs Chang’s feelings of guilt and financial struggle. Her actions suggest she wanted to alleviate Mrs Chang’s emotional and financial concerns, which aligns with altruistic motives.

The experiment directly fostered discrimination based on an arbitrary characteristic (eye color). This mirrors real-world systemic discrimination and demonstrates how quickly people can adopt superiority or inferiority mindsets when power is unequally distributed. Children in the "inferior" group (brown eyes) likely experienced shame, humiliation, and decreased self-esteem. These effects could have long-lasting emotional consequences, especially at a formative stage in their development. Conversely, children in the "superior" group (blue eyes) were encouraged to adopt behaviors of arrogance, entitlement, and prejudice, potentially reinforcing negative attitudes toward others. Adults frequently discriminate based on arbitrary traits such as skin color, religion, gender, socioeconomic status, or nationality. This is evident in practices like racial segregation, workplace bias, and unequal access to resources or opportunities.Adults tend to favor their "in-group" while alienating or demeaning "out-groups." This dynamic is visible in cultural nationalism, political partisanship, and even workplace cliques.

Nchimbi speaks about the stereotype that people of African descent must fit a certain mold in terms of appearance, behavior, and interests. For instance, she describes how she was expected to conform to preconceived notions about what it means to be “African” or “black.” This includes assumptions about her language, clothing, mannerisms, and even her academic interests. These stereotypes serve to box her into a narrow and inaccurate view of her identity.

The children were labeled brown-eyed children as superior and blue-eyed children as inferior. This created a stark social hierarchy within the classroom, with the brown eye group exhibiting discriminatory behavior towards the blue eye group. The experiment also had a profound psychological impact on the children, leading to feelings of inferiority, shame, and anger. It demonstrated how easily labels and stereotypes can affect self-esteem and social behavior. Adults might engage in dehumanizing behavior towards members of out-groups, as seen in instances of prejudice and discrimination.

I find it disturbing that children are so easily influenced and that a simple sentence can change their perspective. Their teacher simply said "blue-eyed people are the better people in this room", that they are "smarter" and immediately the children picked up on this. Their behaviour changed completely, with the blue-eyed boy picking on the brown-eyed boy.

Yes, I think adults unknowingly succumb to such behaviour. For instance, during COVID-19, some people stereotyped individuals from China or East Asia as being responsible for the virus, leading to xenophobia. This led to instances where students of chinese ethnicity studying in The West were often physically and verbally attacked. This was due to the false belief that had been implanted in people's minds, just like how the teacher brainwashed the kids in the video, convincing them that blue-eyed people are superior.

Alice's changes in attitude and behavior can be explained through social cognition by examining how she interprets and adapts to her social environment. Observing that her peers are extroverted and outgoing, Alice perceives that being quiet might lead to social isolation. To avoid feeling left out, she adopts an outgoing persona, influenced by social cues and group norms. This adjustment aligns with her desire to fit in and reduce cognitive dissonance, as she modifies her behavior to match her environment. Positive reinforcement from her peers, such as forming friendships and receiving acceptance, further encourages her to maintain this new persona. This demonstrates how social cognition shapes her behavior, as her perception of social norms and the feedback from her environment guide her actions and attitudes.

Since prosocial behaviors are shaped by prior experiences and memories, it may not be easy to stop prejudging others instantly. However, we can work toward bridging this gap by seeing people as individuals and genuinely getting to know them for their character and personality. When we view people as individuals rather than defining them by their social group, we break down the barriers of prejudice and focus on who they truly are.

Alice may engage in self-perception, where she forms her self-concept based on her behaviours. By adopting an outgoing persona, even though it feels uncomfortable, Alice may begin to see herself as more extroverted. This change in behaviour allows her to feel that she is part of the group, and over time, her self-perception might shift to include the more social aspects of her personality, even though they aren't entirely natural for her.

Mdm Bong’s actions, while kind and motivated by a desire to help, might not fully qualify as Altruistic because they seem to involve personal emotional benefits such as her own happiness from helping and possibly a lack of alignment with Mrs Chang’s feelings or desires. The teacher, by categorising students based on eye color, created a hierarchy that mirrored real-world prejudices. This exercise revealed how easily children internalise bias and discrimination, highlighting the psychological impact of such labels. I think adults behave in the same way. From this experiment, it is evident that many adults carry the biases formed during childhood into adulthood.

She highlights how peers define her identity based on racial stereotypes, such as being told she “acts like a white person” or that she is different from “other black girls.” These remarks reflect societal assumptions that categorise individuals into negative stereotypes based on race. Joanne discusses how she feels pressure to conform to these stereotypes, implying that society expects her to fit a particular mold associated with being black, which includes negative traits like aggression or unattractiveness.

It would be dangerous if children were introduced to such a mindset at a young age and carry them into adulthood where they may take harsher discriminatory actions towards minority groups. I have seen adults behaving in such a similar manner especially in videos featuring african americans being discriminated due to their skin colour.

This made her question her own social identity and instead change herself to fit in to society as a "Black girl" and not being able to be herself. We go through similar things here as we often have faced certain stereotypical assumptions or comments towards us for being part of a social group and as a social identity.

This is because she is forced to step out of her comfort zone to interact with new people. Thus by adopting an out going personality, she managed to find a group of friends :)

This demonstrates the alarming ease with which stereotypes and biases can take hold, leading to division, feelings of inferiority, and even mistreatment among the children.

Mrs Chang has shared with Mdm Bong that she feels bad for her children that spend so much money on her treatment. Hence, Mdm Bong should have known that giving more money to Mrs Chang will make her feel more apologetic towards her friends as well. Although Mdm Bong has given up a large sum of money for Mrs Chang, it still did not help her but cause her to feel more uncomfortable.

I think we can overcome prejudice if we just treat everyone as equals and to stop listening to the prejudiced opinions and comments of other people around you even if they are your friends as they may not understand what they feel or express is them being prejudiced. In addition to this you can also educate your friends if they ever do anything that stereotypes others by letting them know how that is not really a nice thing to do and how they would feel if someone were to do it to them. I think it really boils down to experiencing some form of prejudice yourself to know how unpleasant it feels hence if everyone were to understand and empathise with how being stereotyped feels we may be able to overcome prejudice

The attitude/prejudice they have against those people still remains the same because their schemas remains unchanged.

However, if we are able to correct the social cognition of that person, that person may learn to accept the "out-group" person and slowly these "group" barriers are broken down. It is more important to address the root cause of the mindset thinking and usually this is done through education. It's important because social acceptance is the way to go reduce judgements/comparisonsamong one another compared to social tolerance where prejudice views remain.

I don't think Mdm Bong was truly being altruistic. Since Mrs Chang shared in private with Mdm Bong about her dilemma, she did not intend nor expect Mdm Bong to help her. In addition, she was not facing any financial difficulty, she was merely a bit embarrassed to keep asking for money from her children. When Mdm Bong approached their mutual friends for money, they might have thought that Mrs Chang was urgently in need of money and hence they donated. If they knew that money was not tight, I'm sure that a few of them would have refused to donate money.

Mrs. Chang privately shared her sensitive information to Mdm bong and was not in any urgent need of money. However Mdm Bong decided to publicly raise funds for Mrs. Chang. There could have been hidden intentions for Mdm Bong as she could have done this in order to gain recognition and praises from others by appearing to have done a good deed. Their attitudes and views changes so drastically and they became so condescending towards each other, breaking the classroom harmony. This situation is fairly common in many phases in our life, such as the work industry and comminutes.

True altruism means helping someone with no benefit to yourself. While Mdm Bong helped Mrs Chang, she also felt happy and proud about it, which means she got something out of it too (like feeling good or being seen as helpful). So, her actions were caring, but maybe not 100% altruistic, because she also gained something emotionally.

All because a teacher, a perceived authority figure, said that blue eyes were superior in a simple exercise. Adults do behave the same way as the experiment shows that prejudice and discrimination can be learnt very early on. Not just with learning different cultures and unlearning our biases and prejudices, but also to learn to be more empathetic to others. This helps to break down ‘barriers’ between different races and be less ignorant about one another. We can then learn to accept that we are all equals and have an understanding that a person is not just their stereotype but rather who they are on a deeper level.

To be altruistic: to show or bring advantages to others, even if it results in disadvantages for yourself.

Personally, I would say that Mdm bong was altruistic. Mdm Bong raised a charity package for Mrs Chang, which showed that Mdm Bong went out of her way to help others. Mdm Bong decided to help despite knowing that Mrs Chang's kids are already capable and paying for Mrs Chang's medical fees.

Thus, I would say that Mdm Bong was altruistic because her stepping out to create this charity package came at a cost of her potentially being disliked or talked bad by Mrs Chang's kids. Mrs Chang's kids or Mrs Chang herself might feel bad and embarassed to receive such amount of money, and might have thoughts such as, "Mdm Bong thinks I am too poor is it?" Which is proven in the case study, "However, mrs chan looked a bit uncomfortable."

I found it disturbing how fast these children, who were described as sweet and kind at the beginning, adopted the mindset that blue eyes were superior to brown eyes and very quickly started to show discrimination and prejudice by treating their fellow classmates differently. I do think that adults also behave the same way, because adults were children once, so I believe that if they also had the idea and belief implanted in them from a young age, then they’d grow up believing it and thus would discriminate and have prejudiced opinions as well.
