Today I watched the first half of the "Making Room for Belonging in School". This webinar highlights the critical link between students’ sense of belonging and their academic success. When students feel included, they perform better; when they don’t, their performance suffers and inappropriate behaviors increase. With such little time in our class periods, I must remember to be intentional about getting to know our students better to help them feel better connected to school and build their sense of belonging.

I watched and learned about Eduprotocols. This is something I have never seen before, which is refreshing. I really like the Fast and Curious protocol. I think that the students would enjoy this. I also liked the idea of Mathreps. I need to spend some more time understanding the framework. Thinking about 20 years ago, lol. It reminds me of the mind maps we used all use to organize learning. I watched some of the videos about Edupro because I'm really looking to figure out ways to be more proactive and engaging with the students verses using a worksheet all the time. They have an iPad, why not make sure they use it for good. I think using it as classroom work, an activity, or a review is a great way to get them engaged and learning. I want to play around with the website more to learn what I can use.

It was a nice reminder that even while things are overall very difficult right now, there are still students doing the right thing and even going above and beyond expectations. I watched the videos on the different strategies for engaging students. I really liked a couple of them and want to try them in my classroom. I spent time thinking about how I can use them for math related content like the iron chef. This can be used for an easy review or checking knowledge activity.

I have never used Canvas as a system in the classroom. I am trying to create a mock class where I can use the system prior to executing it with an entire class. I am still a bit confused though but only because I never knew about the system and have only played with it for maybe an hour total. I am exploring curriculum development as well, and I hope the system will help support that effort. I will put that on tomorrow's training! :)

I continued to set up my classes in Canvas. I have all of them set up and a module set up of literacy games for students to play when they complete their Reading Plus. Jennnigs looked at one of the choice board options called Eduprotocols. There are nine different options to choose from. They are very short and quick activities that you can use with students for every aspect of a lesson plan. I am definitely going to look further into these.

I continued looking through this Website. There are so many options for me to use in my classroom. I see that Miller talked about putting them in her sub plans and I think that's a great idea. I need to make my class more interesting and I'm hoping some of these lesson will help me do that and if it works, then I want to continue with it for the rest of the year. I do also think it could really help make things easier for me.

I spent the time getting LETRS set up and log in was not working. I have a lot of catching up to do but I have really gotten a lot out of LETRS in the past.

I really enjoyed learning the FAST & CURIOUS method of instruction because it is a structure requiring very little change from the way we already do things in the classroom. However, I disagree that the thin slides method is useful because at the MS level we have not yet learned to take notes. Shortcuts should not be used until after you understand the process behind the shortcut. Notes are exceptionally difficult for cadets here at Hamilton. It's a great way to ease planning and give students repetition with content and technology.

Eduproticals: I particularly like "Thin Slides" and "Sketch & Tell" and plan to incorporate on of the two into my upcoming unit on the Constitution. Some of that material can get complex, so I like the idea of having the students research, put together information on their own, then sharing it with a partner.

I had heard about EduProtocols before and like the idea of using similar lessons several times and changing the content. I already do this some because my students like routine. I also noticed that I do some of these activities in a variety of ways, but I like how they explained it. One of the lessons that stuck out to me was the Iron Chef. I liked how they described secret ingredients and gave choices for those ingredients such as an interesting fact. I also like the idea of having students do activities such as the Thin Slides. I think I would mix these with the idea of a gallery walk because my students would learn more from that than presentation style

I explored the CHAMPS choice board. Reviewing attention signal, expectations, transitions, non-contingent attention, and corrective procedures impacts my teaching and learning. I am able to focus on areas I may have forgot or sharpen up the CHAMPS system/implementation in the classroom. One area I have been a little too relaxed in and could revisit being more strict in is transitions.

Canvas - I didn't get to go far with creating quizzes on Canvas when Josh was here and took today's PL to look more into that. Specifically, open ended questions. I learned that there are multiple options for assessments on Canvas, as well as, self-grading on certain quizzes. Overall, my plan is to get to a point to where I'm comfortable enough on Canvas to use it as my learning platform at the start of next school year.

I used the Teach like a Champion guide today. I spent most of my time looking at the Wicor Strategy cards. I did a lot with Wicor last year because I student taught at an AVID school, but it was nice to learn more about the specific strategies (and there were a lot to choose from!). The strategy that stood out to me was the Anticipation Guide. I liked the idea of having them decide whether they agreed with topics before reading or learning them and then seeing if they changed their opinions afterwards. Since I am trying to get my students to back their opinions, this goes with one of my main goals for the year.

I got out my "Discipline in the Secondary Classroom" book by Sprick. I found a chart (Exhibit C.2) that is labeled, Misbehavior Recording sheet in a seating chart format. I am changing the title to "Positive Behavior Recording sheet." I feel that I have been focusing more on the negative behavior and less on the positive behavior. Pretty much back to the basics. : )

I have been having a lot of trouble with student behavior lately, I went through and watched most of the videos about the CHAMPS and STOIC and about management of the classroom and students. I'm not sure if it will work or not, because most of these I have been implementing. I wish it would teach me more patience with these students, but I am trying to find better ways to reach them. Anyone has any other suggestions, I will take them. I had an incident with 3 students today and now I feel like I just lost all will to try. I want to be a good teacher as well as a teacher that can have a good relationship with students, but it's so hard when there's no respect. I wish there was more in CHAMPS and the STOIC about schools like ours where the kids are rougher than most places. These strategies might work on students in other schools, but they don't really work as well here.

I explored fast and furious under the Edu Protocols. It is an interesting approach to taking a quick quiz to assess knowledge on a new topic and doing the same quiz everyday throughout the lesson or week. The goal is to get 95% by the end of the week. I could incorporate this into lessons each day to assess learning. While I did explore this, I am not sure I will include it into my teaching routine with students. It may be something another teacher would be able to use in their instruction.

I am currently working on creating an exam in Canvas and trying to decide the best way for my students to complete the assignment. I’m debating between using paper or Canvas. One concern is that when students use their iPads, they tend to get distracted, spending only a few minutes working and then a lot of time playing games. However, using Canvas has its advantages, such as auto-grading, which can be very efficient. I still need to experiment with both methods to determine which approach works best for my students.

Today, I decided to look through some of the WICOR strategies again. I did this last time too, but there were so many of them that I did not get through them all. I also adapted some of the skills I saw last time for a few lessons. I do a lot of drawing in my class and decided to look at some of those skills. I personally liked the "Sketch, Label, Caption" idea quite a bit and I think it could be useful in my class. I like the idea of not only having them draw what they have learned but also having them write a summary of why it is important and how it is shown in the picture.

I started with watching some of the Teach Like a Champion videos, but switched to TPTs after the first few didn't quite match up my classroom style and the work ethic of our student population. Many of the TPTs I looked at were ones that I already incorporate, such as, ranking, thumbs up/thumbs down, and various hold ups. I had never heard of the 3 Sentence Wrap Up and A-Z Sentence Starter activities, and can see using those as effective ways for students to share out after group works.
