There is a great deal of social commentary in chapter 2 of The God of Small Things, particularly relating to the Post-Colonial Indian identity. Share your thoughts and ideas based on characters.

Chacko has been effected by the Post-Colonial Indian identity by his literary taste, as he is shown reading quotes frequently from western works such as The Great Gatsby. As a person, Chacko was Ammu’s brother, who received all the privilege that Ammu was denied. Chacko went to Oxford, received a degree, and became a Rhodes Scholar. While in London he married Margaret Kochamma, but she left him after their daughter, Sophie Mol, was born. Chacko then returns to Ayemenem and takes over Paradise Pickles. Chacko supports Marxism, in practice he acts as a typical landlord with traditional caste prejudices, contrary to his Marxist beliefs.

Pappachi is revealed to be an Imperial Entomologist, who discovered a new species of moth. The Institute of Delhi, where he was studying at the time, refused to recognize the moth as a new species, and when Pappachi was proven correct years later, the moth still was not named after him. He became a bitter man, frequently beating his wife, Mammachi, who he resented for being so well-liked and talented (playing violin). Chacko put an end to Pappachi beating Mammachi as soon as he came home to find him in the act. Eventually, Pappachi died of a heart attack.
