I feel like 2-4 is ideal. In math- since you can't see their work while they are working- it allows you to check in and track all progress when they hold up their boards, then with reading/writing gives students more of a turn to talk.

The most helpful thing for me is having students write using Google Docs or Slides. This means that you can pull up student work while they are working. You can watch them as they write and revise.

If I want students to do some form of writing during the small group, I will make an assignment just for the students in the small group on google docs. Then during the small group, I can pull up each students doc and see their thinking in progress. I can also then share my screen and show the whole group 1 students work, if I want to spotlight something.

One thing that has helped me in math small groups and in math mini lesson, is giving students a set amount of time to work (for example 1 minute), then at the end of this time, everyone holds up their boards to show work, even if they aren't done. This helps to prevent the slower mathematicians from just waiting for the quicker ones to show their answer and then feeling like they don't have to finish the problem. Depending on where they are at, I will give them more work time or intervene with some teaching.

I haven't used this as much with small groups- but the waterfall chat is a helpful tool for teachers to know. I've been using it a lot recently with my vocabulary work and it really gets almost all students involved and excited to see what their classmates will say

2-4 is nice. You'll need flexibility though because sometimes students are absent on their small group day and you'll need to throw them in another group otherwise they miss the important small group attention.

2 devices!!! You can run two groups at a time (in 2 different break out rooms) Students can share with each other more and teacher can still monitor.

For younger kids that typing would be hard, you can have parents up load a pic to a padlet so you can reference and even share their writing as mentor writing. But you may need to really hound parents to snap a pic and upload unfortunately.
