Make sure the area is safe.

Tap the person and shout, "Are you okay?"

If there's no response, call emergency services (or ask someone to call).

2. Check for Breathing

Look, listen, and feel for normal breathing for no more than 10 seconds.

If the person is not breathing or only gasping, start CPR.

3. Start Chest Compressions

Place the heel of one hand in the center of the chest (on the lower half of the breastbone).

Place your other hand on top, interlocking fingers.

Push hard and fast, at least 2 inches deep and at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute (same rhythm as the song Stayin’ Alive).

Allow the chest to fully rise between compressions.

4. Give Rescue Breaths (if trained to do so)

Tilt the head back slightly and lift the chin.

Pinch the nose shut, make a complete seal over the person’s mouth, and give 2 breaths (each lasting about 1 second).

Watch for the chest to rise.

If the chest doesn’t rise, reposition the head and try again.

5. Continue CPR

Do 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths (if providing breaths).

Keep going until medical help arrives, the person starts breathing, or you are too exhausted to continue.

For Children and Infants:

Use one hand for children (or two for larger children).

Use two fingers for infants, pressing about 1.5 inches deep.
