The country's political system is based on a fundamentalistic (i.e. literal, strict) interpretation of the Bible (specifically, Old Testament). Commenting on the religion in Gilead, M. Atwood states that Gilead's government is "not really interested in religion; they're interested in power". Infertility and environmental mess are key problems Gilead's masterminds are trying to solve. The country has a very strict social structure with citizens being divided into "classes" and dressed according to their social function. Here, the career opportunities and life trajectories are directly dependent on person's gender (or rather - sex), fertility and reputation. Women are not allowed to work, read and write, travel freely.
