Ronald McDonald House by Evelyn Lenox

The mission of Ronald McDonald House is to reduce the burden of childhood illness on children and their families. They create a comfortable and caring environment and providing the needs and resources families may need. They get rid of the worry and expense of finding a close, comfortable, and affordable place for a family to stay while their child receives the medical care they need. That can make a world of difference to a child bravely battling an illness or recovering from a serious injury.

At Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City, they keep families with sick children close to each other and the care and resources they need. At their three Houses adjacent to Children’s Mercy Hospital and Ronald McDonald Family Room, they create places of respite where families can rally around and support one another. While they are near Children’s Mercy downtown, they serve all pediatric hospitals in Kansas City.
----------------------------------------
Families come to their House from throughout Kansas and Missouri, across the United States, and from around the world seeking medical care for their critically ill children. They surround their guests with love and support from their volunteers, staff and other guest families who share the same hopes and fears. Parents living with us meet and gain support from other guests who understand exactly what they’re going through. Children meet other kids with a tracheotomy tube, a bald head, or a mask covering their face. And volunteers meet other kind-hearted, generous individuals with the same passion for helping others when they need it most.

It all began in Philadelphia in 1974 when three-year-old Kim Hill, the daughter of Philadelphia Eagles football player Fred Hill and his wife, Fran, was being treated for leukemia at St. Christopher’s Hospital For Children. During Kim’s three years of treatment, the Hills often camped out on hospital chairs and benches and ate makeshift meals out of vending machines, while they watched other parents doing the same thing. Many also traveled great distances to bring their child there leaving them with no place to stay. The Hills knew that there had to be a solution. Fred rallied the support of his Eagles teammates to raise funds. The team offered it's support to Dr. Audrey Evans at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Evans dreamed of a comfortable temporary residence for families of children being treated at her hospital. Murray enlisted Don Tuckerman from the local McDonald’s advertising agency and launched the St. Patrick’s Day Green Milkshake promotion. Funds raised went toward purchasing an old house located near the hospital. And, thus, the first Ronald McDonald House came to be in Philadelphia in 1974 – a home away from home for families of ill children. Today, more than 250 Ronald McDonald Houses in 26 countries support families around the world.
