The rights of the people were affected by the authoritative decisions which were made which prioritises the power of political party rather the rights of the people. For example, when the young protestor had written statements which were against the government, the government decided to maintain the regimes control by detaining the protestor without expressing concern over his rights. The goal of the protestors was to establish a democratic systems in which the government could be more accountable and the rights of the people would be protected.

This approach to curbing civil disobedience instigated the conflict's shift from non violent to violent. With the development of more radical rebel groups who retorted by using equally brutal tactics, the conflict worsened. The intervention of foreign actors -- including Islamic militant groups like Al Qaeeda,  and other countries ( Turkey, Russia, USA)—further complicated the narrative of the war.
