thomas came to the moonta mines from cornwalland by the time it was the 1870s , living in Moonta was too busy and hard. Miners and their families lived in really small houses near the moonta mines, close together in the settlement of Moonta Mines, in a seperate area from the main town. Thomas had a home that was simple—built of stone with an earth floor—but it was close to the mines where his father worked. Each day, his father toiled underground in the Elders Lode, near Hughes, Taylors, Stuckeys, and Stirlings shafts. The job was dangerous, and stories abounded of men who never returned after a shift, but it had to be done yet the Moonta Mining Company remained one of the richest area , sustaining families with its wealth.

Li Wei

Li Wei journey started in 1857,

He had left his home in Sze Yap, China, fleeing famine, war, and poverty. Like thousands of others, he had heard tales of gold in Australia—of a chance to change his fate. He knew the journey ahead would be long and treacherous, but he clung to hope.

Upon arrival in Robe, a small coastal town, Li Wei and hundreds of fellow Chinese migrants disembarked. The Victorian government had imposed a hefty ten-pound tax on each Chinese person arriving at its ports, forcing captains to dock elsewhere. Now, he faced a 500-kilometre trek to the Ballarat goldfields, carrying everything he owned in two baskets balanced on a pole over his shoulders.

Days were spent trudging through dense bushland, across rivers, and over rocky terrain. Nights offered little relief, as many settlers refused to let the Chinese set up camp near their towns. The harsh Australian sun burned his skin by day, and the cold bit through his thin garments at night. Hunger gnawed at his belly, and exhaustion threatened to overcome him, but he pressed on.

Weeks later, he arrived in Ballarat, his body worn but his spirit unbroken. The goldfields were unlike anything he had imagined—crowded, chaotic, and often hostile. He quickly learned that many white miners resented the Chinese, accusing them of taking their gold. Laws and local authorities worked against him, and finding a claim to dig was difficult.

He worked tirelessly, saving every ounce of gold he could find. Over time, he found a community among other Chinese miners, who built their own settlements, complete with stores, gardens, and places of worship. Some, like Li Wei, chose to stay in Australia, sending money home to their families and helping future migrants navigate the journey.

Your very welcome amelia

Abdul Rahman, was a 25-year-old from Afghanistan, made it to Australia in 1860 as part of a group of cameleers recruited to assist with the exploration of Australia's vast interior. Skilled in handling camels, Abdul was employed on several significant expeditions, including the one led by John McDouall Stuart in the 1860s. Stuart's expedition was the first to successfully cross the Australian continent from south to north, and the cameleers played a crucial role in carrying supplies, navigating the desert terrain, and transporting equipment. Abdul’s expertise in camel handling ensured the success of the expedition. The camels brought by Abdul and other cameleers became essential to future explorations and the development of transport across the Australian outback. Abdul’s legacy lives on through his contributions to the exploration and settlement of the inland regions of Australia.

Hassan Ali, was a 30-year-old from the Punjab region of India, he arrived in Australia in 1880 apart of a group of cameleers hired for large-scale infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line. This telegraph line, completed in 1872, was crucial for connecting southern Australia to the north, and Hassan’s work as a camel trainer was vital in carrying heavy supplies, such as poles, wire, and equipment, across the challenging desert terrain. Hassan’s expertise in camel handling was indispensable, and his camels became key to the project’s success. As part of the camel teams, Hassan helped ensure that essential materials were transported through vast and isolated areas. His work in developing transport routes contributed significantly to Australia's infrastructure and connected remote regions of the country.

The family fled on a small boat, joining thousands of other Vietnamese people known as "boat people." After being rescued at sea, they stayed in a refugee camp in Malaysia before being accepted into Australia’s refugee program. Minh and his family eventually settled in Melbourne, Victoria, where they began a new life, far from the fear and uncertainty they had left behind.
