<title>Through his handling of the crisis at Fort Sumter, Abraham Lincoln maneuvered the Confederate States into firing the first shot of the Civil War. By announcing his intent to resupply the fort with food but not arms, Lincoln forced the South to choose between two unacceptable options, ensuring they would be perceived as the aggressors regardless of their choice. </title>

<title>Lincoln was one of the biggest political figures during the 1840&#39;s and 1850&#39;s before the civil war said a speech in 1858 saying &quot; A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the union to be dissolved- I do not expect the house to fall- but I do expect it will cease to be divided. it will become all one thing, or the other.&quot;</title>

<title>On April 15, 1861, just three days after the attack on Fort Sumter, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling forth the state militias, to the sum of 75,000 troops, in order to suppress the rebellion. He appealed “to all loyal citizens to favor, facilitate, and aid this effort to maintain the honor, the integrity, and the existence of our National Union.” As days passed, senators noted the tremendous response to the president’s call for troops. “</title>

<title>The Civil War in the United States began in 1861, after decades of simmering tensions between northern and southern states over slavery, states’ rights and westward expansion. The election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 caused seven southern states to secede and form the Confederate States of America; four more states soon joined them. The War Between the States, as the Civil War was also known, ended in Confederate surrender in 1865. </title>

<title>&quot; With secession, several forts, including Fort Sumter in South Carolina, became outposts in a foreign land. Abraham Lincoln made the decision to send fresh supplies to the beleaguered garrisons. On April 12, 1861, Confederate warships turned back the supply convoy to Fort Sumter and opened a 34-hour bombardment on the stronghold. The garrison surrendered on April 14. The Civil War was now underway. On April 15, Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to join the Northern army.&quot; </title>

<title>did you know Confederate General Thomas Jonathan Jackson earned his famous nickname, &quot;Stonewall,&quot; from his steadfast defensive efforts in the First Battle of Bull Run (First Manassas). At Chancellorsville, Jackson was shot by one of his own men, who mistook him for Union cavalry. His arm was amputated, and he died from pneumonia eight days later.</title>
