As I sing it in the tune of Julie Andrew’s from ‘The Sound of Music’..I am a photographer so composition is very important, and so I feel I am in my era of learning how to put together good composition. I really enjoyed putting this together with my film camera, along with the film and a picture that was showcased in the Spring Art show in 2023, along with my favorite slip-ons and a bouquet my teacher brought me from her flower farm. I know the background was supposed to be neutral, but my middle child thought it would look better with the starry background, so I obliged and i think he was right! The colors are mostly black and white, but the teal tabletop I did this still life on is my favorite color and with the colorful bouquet, I feel like it is a good balance.

I like what the filter did to the background, I feel like it helped blend the background and make it more tonal with all of the objects combined. No changes were made to the camera, the picture or the shoes really.

Nothing is bleeding into each other, they are all individual pieces now, The discoloration in the shoes became yellow-y, which i like. It just makes all the colors pop and makes the photo more rich and interesting to look at.

It doesn’t something completely different, it just makes the whole picture greyscale, like the same tones of great, whereas the B&W really just muted all the colorful points and made them a darker bland gray. When lowering the saturation to 0, the only things that changed really are the colorful flowers and they change to a light gray rather than a muted dark, bland gray.

Not sure why honestly, but I would say it looks pretty “cool” if i do say so myself. I didn’t notice how much blue there was even in the picture before playing with the temperature of the picture.

All the yellows and oranges are lit up and have replaced all the dark colors with a nice warm tint. The yellow in the flowers are almost dull yellow because it’s too much yellow. The yellow enhancement didnt make the shoe look as cool as it did in the high saturation when it was turned yellow-y and looked cool. This way kinda blows out all the whites in the picture like on the tag and the Matt board of the picture.

I wasn’t feeling it having the colorful bouquet be on the right side and there be no real balance of color in the whole piece. The flower’s definitely were meant to be in the middle since most of the colors are very similar tones of black, white and neutral.

The color balance feels off and the composition definitely needed improvement, even though I did like the positioning of the shoes, camera, film and picture in this one.

The same can be said for any item there that has the same depth of color, even if it is a different color. The black and white filter was very cool to see because it removes the aspect of color and you are forced to focus on tone and contrast.

I am drawn to very intense colors, and for me something about colors like these just feels right. It is like looking at candy, literal eye candy. What I also like in particular about this one is the separation and difference between the cooler colors and warmer colors. On the left, you can see that the top of the lipstick and the end of the sketchbook are similar colors, and are separated by this beautiful rich, blue and purple, where nothing else in the photo has a color even remotely that close. The filter brings out the brightest aspect in each item and greatly enhances it, making everything brighter, and dare I say, truer to each item’s color.

There is a place for low saturation, and what I have found is that low saturation in visual art forms is extremely useful in portraying tone, creating an environment, or eliciting a subconscious, emotional response. For instance, in one of my favorite games, resident evil, the saturation is extremely low for already an already dark color palette. I have also seen many horror, movies, dramas, and artistic creations that have used the low saturation as a means of invoking a feeling of nostalgia, sadness, darkness, depression, and or unease/uncomfortability. Resident evil specifically uses it to make the player feel threatened and uncomfortable in their environment and it works. For my still life, I feel strangely nostalgic when looking at this version. It reminds me of an old time period, like these items may have belonged to some beautiful woman in the 1950s who has lost some thing, even though I know these items are mine, and certainly not from the 1950s.

I really love asymmetry in pieces and I feel like this perspective and the fact that not every part is visible makes it interesting. This one you can also the depth of each item, and how close it is to the camera, and the small details are very visible. Since high saturation for this project ended up being my favorite way to portray the items. That is what I used for the other two compositions as well. This photo is also unique compared to the other photo angles, because the lipstick and sketchbook provide a very clear and literal border between the violet hues and the other warm colors.

I like this composition because you can see every item in the photo from a far away and head on perspective, where is the other photos I used had higher foreshortening, and were more abstract. Head on photos are extremely honest in the way that you are just looking at some thing at face value, dead center and sometimes, that can be extremely powerful. This also shows off some very stark contrast between all of the extremely bright colors compared to the white blankness of the wall.

My keys, wallet, airpods, and portable (far left on top of the books) are my daily essentials that I always bring when I'm going out of the house. The postcard and letters in the middle are from my friends in Southern California, one of whom is in the Marines and wrote to us during basic training. The figurines show my appreciation for collecting different trinkets. The books expresses my enjoyment for reading. I like the angle of the picture and the placement of the items. I did use multiple items to represent one topic, so it does feel a bit cluttered. But I also feel like it gives each space meaning. Which is why I picked this as my favorite composition!

The container that the skull mushroom is standing on is Mayco Glaze, civilizing my love trying different places with pottery. The tins is my love of tea with the mug. The candle is for my love of campfires and Burning different scented candles. The reason why I chose the background is because it is a favorite of mine. I have fun memories of the fireplace.

The items selected either depict an interest of mine, a hobby, or something sentimental. I love to paint in watercolor, so I have my watercolor set, a painting I made, and one of the brushes I used to make it. I also like painting bird houses, so I have one of them there too. I like knitting, math, and candles, so I grabbed my current project, my trusty-dusty calculator, and my favorite scented candle. The sentimental items are the rosary I received from my First Holy Communion, The Catechism of the Catholic Church, and a jar of fur from my dead cat. Any other objects were for either lighting or to add some height variations.

I find it very interesting that colors alone have different value without even adding black or white to them. I suspected that the yellows wouldn’t be as dark as reds or blues, but I was surprised by how much. I’m also relieved that with my otter painting, I got the values right, despite using pinks, blues and purples besides just brown and gray. With the black and white filter, it just looks like typical shading.

The shadows are more intense and the highlights aren’t as bright. It also seems like the light of the candle has lost dimension. In the original, the light is a deep, rich yellow with a bright base and shadows in the plastic itself, but this one is paler and flat. The colorful beads to the rosary have also become dull, like they’re tarnished.

My walls are already a cool beige color, but this filter makes them look gray. And my carpet is a warm gray, but in the photo, all the warmth is gone. And similar to the desaturated photo, the shadows seem to have gotten more intense, though the highlights are just more of a pale yellow but still as bright.

I used the edit feature on my phone and changed the photo to black and white as you can see the light above makes the objects look to bright so when it's in black and white the detail on some of the objects and blinded. Yet it still one of my top 3 favorite due to the color and I really like how the tea mug looks.

Some objects I utilized for my still life were my keychains, earbuds, backpack, and a cross-stitch. For the background I utilized my folklorico skirt because it is my favorite color, it represents my heritage, and passion for Mexican folklorico. The keychain in the top left represents my religion, which I’m very devoted and involved with. The purse keychain and lettered keychain (spells Chiquilistlán) also represent my heritage as they are from my town in Mexico. The keychain next to it has an image of my favorite artist and my love for music is also portrayed through the inclusion of my earbuds. The llama keychain is one out of 4 llamas that me and each of my friends own. The last keychain has my initial ‘R’ but also is very meaningful because my grandfather gifted it to me. This represents how important my family is to me. I include my backpack because it represents me as a student but also my love for traveling, as I use it for such. Cross-stitching has been a hobby I’ve had for years yet I lack time to focus on it but recently I’ve been working on it. It is also something very traditional in my hometown and want to preserve that tradition.
